I could have swore the '89-91 Canadian Turbo Firefly's ran with 13" wheels and have the same brakes as the GTi ...

Is it true that 13" wheels won't fit on a GTi?

I pulled the front and it definitely does look it would be tight.

I tried the steel 13" wheels from a Metro convertible on an '89 GTi and the would not fit. If I recall correctly, the center hole for the hub was too small on the Metro rims, and the rear brake calipers would not fit. You might find an alloy rim that would fit, but it would be trial and error.

I tried 13" rims from a turbo and they would not fit over the rear disks. Also the brakes are different. The Turbo has drums on the rear and I believe smaller disks on the front.

Iain Paterson posted something about it, it´s possible all you have to do is use the axel grinder in the rim to make the needed clearance, a few mm.

Oscar Bartol. Madrid (Spain).

I don't know if I would start grinding away on "extra" material. I guess if it was just the corner of a caliper or something....
Keep those RPM's high!www.lobase.homestead.com/lobase.html

Exactly... I believe this is what Ian did to get
the 13's to fit. Just ground down a wee bit of the
corner of the rear calipers to get 'em to fit.
It's on his webpage I think.

Darryl

My GTi came with 13" American Racing Alloys that fit over the calipers with what appears to be about 1/8" of clearance.

When I get a chance this week, I'll pull one to get a model number and to confirm that the calipers have not been modified (they don't look like they have been).

Bottom line: I'm pretty sure 13" wheels exist that will fit...

I was at a garage sale on the weekend and saw a brand new set of aluminum mags for sale. These were EI ???? turbine style mags that were a 13" with a universal bolt pattern. NEVER had a tire or valve installed and in MINT condition. Catch this the old guy was "asking" 20 bucks each!!!!! Someone could probably get all 4 for only 60bucks canadian (40 US)......for light 13" rims.....if anyone is serious (they are in British Columbia) I will bring the guys phone number to work and post it.
Keep those RPM's high!www.lobase.homestead.com/lobase.html

I run Compomotive 13 inch wheels for competition. I had to grind about 1 mm off the very corners of the caliper retaining brackets. I've just discovered two of the wheels will clear the standard calipers and two won't, (different car), so It's best to check all of them, production tolerance and all that. I have no clearance problems at the rear (disk converted saloon), provided I keep the balance weights external.
