92' metro XFI,manual trans.I had a noise on the passenger side.Thought it was the strut,so I replaced it with a used one I had.Noise is still there but not as loud.It has a rattling noise when going over small bumps. On the highway or good flat roads no noise.I replaced the front control arms with new ones. This was a problem it had when I bought the car.Was wondering if the part that mounts to the body that the control arms mount onto could have been bad and that is the culprit? Are these parts available new?Or does anyone have any other ideas? Also replaced the axle on the same side,as the control arms were so bad the axle pulled out of the trans. The front brake rotors are rusty.Replacing them this weekend.Didn't know if the brake calipers could be chattering but I don't think so.Steve

On my friends car the caliper rubs the rotor on the left side and makes a mean sceeching noise on left turns. I am currently looking for front GTI control arms complete with the brakes and knuckles. There also seems to be a knocking noise when he goes over bumps.

I'll check the dust sheilds behind the rotors, but the noise sounds like the whole front hub assembly is loose.

Its probably the dust shield. I'd check the strut to body bolts too.

Did you ever solve your noise? I just got a clunking noise when going over bumps and dips. No noise on smooth roads at any speed. Noise is not affected by turning, load, acceleration, braking, etc. Only when the front wheels have to suddenly absorb shock from dips and bumps of any kind.

I was going to replace the front struts. But in another thread (link below) they replaced the struts and still have the noise.

http://www.teamswift.net/viewtopic.php? ... trut+noise

both this thread and the the one I linked, are old and the people with the issue never posted if they gave up or finally solved it.

I am also wondering if it's my exhast system having come loose or something like that... I can't make the noise happen using any manual hand method on a lift.
