After I finished dealing with the broken control arm fiasco I ended up having to get an alignment and it turns out I need new inner tie rod ends. It is always something it seems. I guess that is what you get with a car that is 25 years old, hopefully one day I will get it to a point where the steady flow of issues will trickle off. In the mean time I have a few questions about the tie rod ends. I have heard that you have to take the outer ends off to do the inner ends and that you might as well replace them both to avoid having to do it again later, is this good advice? Secondly are my gti tie rod ends the same as a geo metro of the same body style or do I need specific gti ones? Thirdly, is this a job I can do myself and then go have it realigned or do I just need to let the professionals handle this one?

Assuming this is an mk1 gti?

I feel your pain. I replace tie rod ends about 1 a year or 2. (still try'n to figure out why)

You can do the tie rod ends yourself. I do them as stated above. To make it easy on yourself get the tierod end tool from say harbor freight or some place. It's quite easy to do and I have it down to a less that 3 min job. But again I do it yearly and have gotten good at it. Youtube has videos on the subject also. All tie rod ends are pretty much the same concept.


I'm not sure if they can be interchangeable from mk1 to later.

The job is pretty straight forward and if you have some basic tools like a socket wrench and some spanners. You can do it. I would suggest if you don't already have one, either download or buy a Haynes manual for the geo metro chevy sprint. Very valuable info in there.

you can do it by yourself.. and inner tie rods should last much longer than tie rod ends so imo it's best to replace them both at same time and on both sides of car.. it's not that expensive.. i think i gave about 50eur for custom lenght 2x inner tie rods and about 30eur for 2 stock swift tie rod ends.. and i think all swifts (atleast year 1988-2002, don't know for mk1) have the same tie rod ends..

if you want those parts to last almost forever go to someone who make them and say you need it for rally car :twisted:
inner tie rod will probably be standard, but tie rod end shoud look like this one (with uniball joint)
