If you are running a rally chip such as Tom's or super chip what is the best octane level to look for at the pump. Would you suggest octane additives such as STP or NOS with nitro metane.

SprintGTI

In Japan, our cars were run on 100 octane - you should always use the highest octane you can and set your timing appropriately. I use 98 octane, which is the highest pump fuel available here in Oz. My car has a full Group A computer.

In Mb. Canada regular oct is 87 & prem oct is 92-94 at least I've never seen a pump have any higher. 87 oct is all some Canadian hick towns like I live in pump, for hillbilly Bob & his pickup truck with the great big mud tires. I keep a good stock of STP octane & it seems to do the trick.
Does anyone know if there is any other way to get octane, because this can get a little $$$
Sprint GTI

I've heard guys talking about using racing fuel for performance
tests. What is the highest octane level, that is safe. By safe I mean it will not blow the engine or cause damage to the fuel system.
If you add one bottle of STP octane booster to a full tank of gas, about 33-36 liters or 8 gallons, how many octane points will you raise the gas.
Sprint GTI

Post subject: Toluene & Xylene

Does anyone know where xylene can be found? What exactly is toluene used for other than an octane booster? So far I haven't been able to find either one.

Here's a good link on Tuolene. I've tried it and it did seem to make a difference. I added 1/2 gal. to my 8-gal. tank (1/16 mixture.)

For normal commuting your going to have to be happy with 92 octane. You can use gasohol, and possibly get more, but unless you have HUGE modifications to your engine, I see no point in additives. Use additives only while racing, and tweek you timing for race fuel only.

Don't forget that big cams, like most people seem to have on here may not affect STATIC compression but certainly affect compression within their working range.

Just went thru the October 2002 issue of Hot Rod Magazine and there was a rodder who asked a question on octane and there was quite a helpful and clear answer that settled a lot of misconceptions.

It's all the way in the back in the Q&A section...pages 104 and 105....should be pretty good help to anyone who's confused.

pretty good reference material....take a peek if you're near a newsstand or magazine rack

Take care dudes,
TGstring

Post subject: Toluene

I went to a painting shop this week end and the guy told me that here in Canada you need a license to buy Toluene, has it is a higly toxic, cancer causing substance. He gave me a number to call, but it's a supplyer for labs so I would need to buy a large quantity (and have a license for it)

Post subject: Re: Toluene

I've looked at several paint/hardware stores & all I find is a paint thinner with toluene as 1 of the ingredients. How could it be more toxic than the gas itself? Does anyone have anymore suggestions?

Sprint GTI
