If I can get it done cheap enough, I'm thinking about having an aluminum crank pulley machined up for my 1.0L. It wouldn't be undersized, it would simply be lighter and without the groove for an AC belt. The stock pulley is just a one-piece, unbalanced steel unit isn't it?

that is correct, because they use the same pulley for the 4cyl and 3 cyl motor

Really? I thought all the debate on here about UDP pulley's ruining bearings and cranks was because the factory pulley's on the 4 bangers had rubber of some sort acting as a balancer and the aftermarket ones didn't.

"some" 4 cyl engines have rubber dampened pulleys, some do not. Off the top of my head I can think of a few motors that don't have the dampened pulley

1) Turbo and non turbo dodge 2.2/2.5s
2) Mitsu 2.6 motor
3) DOHC 2.2 T3 dodge motor
4) some 1.8 and 1.8t VW motors

If you motor doesn't have the rubber dampener, then I wouldn't worry at all about an UDP doing anything other than freeing up some power.

If however you have a dampened crank pulley, it "may" shorten engine life but by how much no one can accurately say, might be 1% might be 50%

Most of those motors have chain driven balance shafts.

Only in the 2.5 dodges for sure, not 100% on the 2.6s or VWs

Great - thanks for clearing that up for me Garret. Now it's just a matter of finding someone capable & willing to make one for a price I can afford.

Misubishi 2.6 has balance shafts. Trust me, you do not want a four cylinder that big without balance shafts.

well I've ran several 2.5s without balance shafts and there was zero diffence in the smoothness of the motor, but those 2.6s weren't exactly the greatest motors ever
