Will Swift/Geo TBI units work in orientations other than vertical ? If not, why not ?

I don't think the fuel system itself would have a problem with the orientation. Essentially you are making a side-draft but without having to worry about a float bowl and gravity.

I do not know off-hand if the TBI unit has coolant passages or if they are confined to the manifold but if it does you might have some air entrapment issues. If that's a big deal you might think about installing a brake bleeder valve. And/or old Renaults used to have some nifty in line bleeder valves for the coolant system. I think you would find them on old R16s or R5s (LeCar in the USA).
