I currently have a 87 sammurai with a 94 1.6 16V SOHC Geo Tracker motor, Doug Thorly header and 2" exhaust and im guessing its putting out about 100hp the vehicle weighs 3280lbs. with 33" tires and 4:30 gears. this is my first 4 banger and dont know anything about it. is 160 or so h.p. possible without a turbo? I'm looking for the most power i can buy (without a turbo) between 1500-5000 RPM. Is there a reputable motor builder around that specializes in this motor? I'm in southern California and the vehicle was built for rock crawling but I'd like to take it to the sand dunes once in a while if it had more power. It currently easily runs 65mph @ 3100 rpm.

the 1hp/cc is kinda hard to atain naturally aspirated... perhaps if you have your heart set on that figure go the nos route?

That's 1hp/10cc's  I'd PM Suprf1y and ask him about building you a head

dyno it, realize your nowhere near 100hp, then turbo it. ;)

:werd:

Low boost setups aren't as hard as you think, and for any kind of sizeable gain in power, you will be WAY ahead of N/A $$ wise.

Love it. Not to knock 87Zuk, but 100hp output is a built 1.6!

Do they not make 90 hp stock?

That's what I was thinking, the 1.3 16V SOHC makes 80hp, and it's restricted all to hell.

Quoted at 96HP but articles in various 4wheeling mags put it closer to 80-85HP.

At the crank it's probably 96Hp, and at the wheels it's probably in the 80-85Hp range once you figure in the drivetrain loss of 15-20%.

i just had my 01 16v dyno'd with all my stuff on it and i hit 77hp to the wheels....80hp stock ummm i think not. try like 59hp.

In this thread there appears to be people comparing crank HP to wheel HP..... I would have to assume the OP is trying to hit 160 crank HP from a motor that was origionally about 95 crank HP. Thats a 60% (!) increase without a turbo, and thats a tall order. That would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 135 whp out of a N/A 1.6? Not saying it coulnd't be done but it won't be done on any kind of budget or with any kind of low end for a 4x4.

Retard the timing a bit, run the stock computer, maybe get a boost referencing adjustable fpr, and run 6 psi and get your 160 crank hp.

To obtain hp like that wouldn't it have to be built for a very high rpm? Would a rock type truck
be better to build for lower rpm torq ? For an engine to breath well enough to run way over stock hp the bottom end could become almost useless for climing.
A turbo could be a good choice for the best of both.

That desert racing looks like a hoot, those dirt desert race trucks are 2 cool, 12 inches of shock travel, they float over anything at 80mph

If not a turbo a supercharger maybe good evn though im sure his gears should take care of the low end pretty well.

old topic but i ask this q in another section...

i would have thought it would be relatively easy to get 160 out of a 1.6 16v engine. If not, WHY not??

my ford 1.6 xflow kent makes 165hp at the flywheel, thats a 1967 design 8v pushrod engine.

I picked up a Tracker RWD a lil while back to replace my metro. (Sad story there) and was also wondering if there were any performance parts out there. Thinking of going prerunner route or dropping it for street use like these two: Image or Image
