Would grinding out the gussets out of inside the stock air box housing make any performance difference?

I was thinking it would prevent turbulence when air is being drafted through the box

TIA

Difficult to say. Modern cars do a fair bit to look at how air flow moves in the airbox to mazimize its effectiveness at particular points (not sure you would class the GTi as a modern car though!).

The only way you could tell is by trying it out and comparing back to back. You might get improvement up higher if it helps total flow or reduces flow restrictions but you also might find at some other point in the engine map there is a bump where harmonic waves in the box negatively affect the flow.

Not sure if you have seen the Autospeed articles where similar experiments were done. Get yourself a manometer (like a dwyer magnehelic gage - cheap and easy to get on ebay) or make one and go for it.

Let us know how you go.
