Post subject:  Muffler Suggestions

I plan on fabbing up a 2" exhaust myself, with no CAT and I want some ideas based on all of your experience for a good muffler that is NOT loud and isn't restricting...I wouldn't mind a smooth sound grumble :lol:

If you could point me in the right direction that would be awesome.

OH, and as far as the exhaust pipe diameter....is 2" good or is there a more optimal size... I'm going to use a genie header.

1-3/4 or 1-7/8 is probably a better size for the GT unless you add a turbo. You're going to want a couple of mufflers. My '89 GTi came with a 2" exhaust with only a straight-through muffler in the rear. VERY loud!

I've ordered a Dynomax ultraflow 2" to go with a genie header and 2" pipe, nothing in between. hope that wont be LOUD. Guess we'll see

2" is a good choice with the Genie, and that's a good muffler. Throw a glass pack in the middle, and it should sound ok.

I like the dyno max mufflers, excellent flow and great noise reduction. Have a 2.5" dynomax on my h22 civic and was really impressed by how quiet it turned out. Ultra flow is going to be loud, for sure add a glass pack to quiet it down.

If I need a glasspack in the middle also, what should I use...and how much
the muffler is already 120 bucks.

I've used cherrybomb glasspack resonator in most of my cars and am content with it.

I believe they run for around $30?

Look up aero turbine on eBay.. This company may have be resurrected.

They have a 2" resonator that is perfect for or car. You can even use it like a muffler like a loud borla. Polished stainless for $40 shipped!

My GTi came with home made 2" exhaust, no cat, and a 6" round Dynomax. It sounded great. Nice rumble at idle and never ridiculously loud. Obviously I added a cat as soon as I could. Hi flow cats are cheap, don't restrict the exhaust, help keep the noise down, and make such a huge difference to the car's pollution that there's no excuse for not installing one.

I recently upgraded to stainless exhaust. With a resonator and a Magnaflow straight-through muffler, the new exhaust was annoyingly loud. My ears would ache after a couple of hours. I switched the muffler to a Stainless Works chambered model. Quieter except at 2600 rpm where it sounds like a high school Honda. I never had that problem with the Dynomax and no resonator. I wonder if the resonator is "resonating" at 2600 rpm.

Anyway, I definitely recommend the Dynomax model 17741. If I hadn't gone stainless, I would have gotten another.

Think I am going to go with a high flow cat,
I called my discount auto parts place and they said theyre 110 bucks.
What relatively inexpensive cat are you thinking of geodecent?

Thanks, It was A & A discount auto part here in stoney creek that gave me that price.
So is 120 bucks for a Dynomax Ultraflo a good price then? It isn't ordered yet....I am still open to getting something different

Dyno max would be quieter and cheaper. Ultra flow is a straight thru stainless design, hence the added cost and loss of sound control. I don't like raspy loud exhaust so I prefer ther dyno max for that reason and it still offers ample flow.

My cheap cat was a Magnaflow. I put it in myself with saddle clamps--a genuine Canadian Tire special! My new cat is no more than a tiny bulge in the 2" stainless pipe. It's a work of art, but cost twice as much. I kept the old Magnaflow and I'm willing to share. If you're interested, I could send it to you for the cost of shipping. (That might not be much less than the new price.)

By the way, the Dynomax I recommend is a Super Turbo. It sounded really nice. The straight-through designs like the DynoMax Ultra Flow are too loud in my opinion. Unfortunately the DynoMax Super Turbo is not stainless, but at about $60 you can buy lots of them! If you want quiet stainless, check out stainlessworks.com. I searched and searched for a stainless "turbo" style muffler, and they were the only maker I could find. Their 4"X8" oval fits our cars perfectly.

Here's a photo of my new cat. I'm sorry I can't remember who made it, but check out all the room for the anti-sway bar and TurbineTech underbody brace!

i used a thunderbolt catalytic converter when i fabricated my stainless steel exhaust. conveniently, it had an o2 bung installed, probably for a downstream sensor but i flipped it around so it was forward of the cat.

i bought one that was rated for a v6 engine, 2" pipe, and mounted a braided stainless flex pipe ahead of it to take any flex pressure off the turbo and exhaust manifold.

to get enough clearance for the turbine tech 4 point brace and the front sway bar, the 2" diameter front system was key. i opened it up to 2.5" just past the sway bar.

at the end of that front section i increased the pipe diameter to 2.5" and left the muffler outlet at 4" which gives me progressive gas expansion to atmospheric pressure. sneaking a 2.5" pipe throught the rear suspension is like threading a needle.

Thoughts from the community:

I have a 2" cat, so, with the restriction just before it, I should now try to stay 2" or bigger all the way back, correct?

I was thinking of going to 2" from the cat to the resonator, which I plan to replace with a glasspack--preferably a long and "quiet" one. Then forgo any other muffler completely and run more 2" or 2.5" out to the side to save the weight of the rest of the exhaust system.

It will be loud sure, but ticket-getting-unbearably loud? Will I lose too much velocity and therefore torque (I am more or less stock)?

I would stay with 2" all the way back. You can always add another short glass pack at the rear if it's too loud.

Yeah, actually thinking going 1 7/8ths up to the glasspack, then 2" from there. I'll have to splice in and out of my 2" cat, but I was just thinking that the Suzuki engineers opened up the exhaust at that specific point for a reason.

What worked for me:
ebay manifold to converter Magnaflow 93135 2" stainless $137.19 delivered
ebay AERO AR20 stainless resonator 2" $38 delivered
Auto Zone Thrush Turbo 2"

Butt-meter has better running, better fuel mileage. Top gear (4.11) seems to have a tourque increase. Not a bit loud or obnoxious. With the top up, can't really hear the exhaust. Top down, does not interfere with the radio.

having to wear hearing protection on long trips (especially trips with long uphill bits) was kind of a bummer.

I have a 2" cat, a 27" long Thrush glasspack and a simple 90 degree mandrel bend to a side exit. That's actually PERFECT until about the third hour of a road trip at which point it suddenly becomes perfectly deafening.

So I got one of these from Supertrapp:

It didn't quiet things much, but just enough to keep us from going crazy and all I have to do is loosen the band clamp to remove it.

Added bonus: a little flatter torque curve at the expense of some horsepower. It's tuneable too, by adding or removing discs, but for now I am just taking it off whenever we aren't covering lots of miles, because, after all, it was perfect without it.

Using an acura 3.2 tl resonator (around 2.25") straight thru with a rather large body (lots of stuffing) for my muffler and an 03 explorer v8 cat. Its fairly loud but we can still hold a conversation pretty easily.
