i had a vw scirocco with a single wiper conversion (and no it didnt look rice, its a volkswagen :-P ) it looks cool but its not practical, there is a big spot on the upper left corner(driver side) and doesnt get cleaned, it can get very annoying in bad weather (when you NEED it clean) and the passenger side has the same thing... :? it can be sweet if its done right (on the right car) but its not that practical... just letting you know

you could always hit the wreckers and dig up a REAL single wiper unit, a lot of the mercedes used them, and i believe the cam gear that extends the wiper arm out at the corners is built into the wiper arm itself.

if your windshield wiper doesn't wipe your whole windshield it IS rice. decreased functionality for appearance :puker:

don't let these guys get to you! :poke:

i made the conversion work on my vert. it's all about increasing the stroke of the wiper so that the blade will pass over the entire windshield.

on the back of the wiper motor there is an eccentric arm with a ball that connects the push rods. pop the push rod loose and remove the wiper motor assembly. then remove the eccentric by backing off the nut and pulling it off of the motor's shaft. you have to cut the eccentric at the bend and weld in a piece of steel to lengthen the arm by 5/8". be careful to protect the shiny, chrome plated ball from welding spatter and high heat. remove the driver's side wiper arm, spindle, and the push rod that connects that spindle to the one in the center of the car. you'll only use the spindle in the center of the window. re-install the wiper motor with the modified eccentric and re-connect the push rod for the remaining spindle.

:!: caution! do not leave the driver's side wiper arm in place after making this mod. the travel of the arm will be too much and the blade will fall of to the side of the windshield and tear up your paint. you can leave the spindle in place but i recommend that you remove the linkage and spindle for that side entirely. it will just expend available energy.

use the wiper arm for the passenger's side if the car as before, but install an 18" or 20" wiper blade to get more height and sweep. with the modified eccentric, the arm will now traverse the entire windshield and won't give you any unswept area.

don't let these other guys get you down. they're just jealous! there's a pic in my member's album of my mono-wiper. keep in mind that i usually don't drive that vert in the rain and never in the snow.

when i had my old beater ('86 civic) i pulled the wipers off since the electrical gremlins had eaten the switch and just used rain-x .. works really well unless you neglect to keep up with the re-application

Reeeaally?... Sounds like an opportunity for more weight savings. Bye-bye front wipers!

i should mention, rainx works GREAT at speeds over 50km/hr, below that speed your windshield doesn't clear itself, but the water beads up really nicely so you can still see much better then having a pair of streaky wipers messing you up.
if you do leave your wipers on, you need to be moving even faster to get enough wind to remove the water. using your wipers wears out the coating faster. just make sure to clean any dried dirt off your windshield whenever you get gas w/ a wet squeegee ..
i've been using the stuff since back when i was into offroading

FYI, mono wipers is still used widely on the touring car racers. The reason beig that you can point it straight up, then it creates less resistance and makes for an aerodynamic advantage over the people with the wipers on normally. And if you ask me that makes it a very functional mod for the next time you are doing 200 on the back stretch. This also allows it to be added to the "Small performance mods" catagory and tosses it right out of the rice section.

Its too bad the haters are to worried calling everything rice before they actually look at where the mod came from first.

everything you said is right, but you forgot to mention that the race cars that have them also have ones built from the lightest of light metals and softest of soft rubbers... they get every last second out of the car this way. Which is fine... like you said, if you're doing 200kph regualry.
But yer not, i know i'm not, so i don't need the .005 seconds on my way to work. What i NEED is for my windsheild to be clean when it's raining. The WHOLE window... not just a middle section.

It's true you should understand the root before calling it rice, but half assing something to make it seem like your trying to get a race car on the street is EXACTLY what i would call rice ;)
I'm sorry but the one wiper "mod" is numero uno on my list for instant lamer car give-away.

I am also under the impression that the mono wiper on those cars sweeps across the whole windsheild as well. It would take some work to make the one on the swift do it, but it could happen

i´m working on that mod now
when it´s done i´ll post pics
but somehow the linkage of the blades will have to be shortened so the wiper blade will not exit from the A pilar , on the drivers side, i´ll have to cut and weld the wiper arm
