I have never had a night vision problem with a blue display.

Now the blue screen on my radio thats about 200 times brighter than it needs to be. Total PITA.

but blue digital dash or blue analog dash (EL backlight) never gave me a problem once I reduced the brightness (then again I tend to go with a VERY dim dash)

plus its not a true blue nanometer wavelength which might have something to do with it.

GF's Beetle has blue LED backlighting for her gauge cluster, and I find it annoying at night. I also run it at about 50%, otherwise it starts making very obvious dim spots.

I guess I'm a little partial to the old green, it's just different from most cars out there, which are either blue or orange/red.

I have a radio with blue back lighting. I have to put my hat over it at night it annoys me so much.

These instrument clusters look great by the way, my only concern would be if the sun was directly behind you and low on the horizon, the sun light would wash out the color. My GF owns a 2008 Honda Civic and her speedo is digital, and it is positioned in such a way that sunlight can't reach it.

My JDM subaru gtx wagon had a digital dash a lot like that, a little more 'Knight rider'ery though, never had a problem with sunlight, as soon as you turned on the headlights it automatically dimmed so wasn't massively annoying.

the electroflourescent gauges aren't too bad for direct sunlight and day driving. blue lighting probably affects me more than most people as i have old eyes, hammered by years in the south pacific and a lifetime of careless welding - pre-cataract, astigmatism, crappy night vision with halos around lights, etc. blue light just finishes me off.

call me old fashioned, but i still prefer good old pointers for most gauges unless i want extremely good calibration and precise data (like boost pressure, afr, fuel pressure and the like.) pointers on gauges like tachometers and speedometers are easier to recognize at a quick glance. those fancy bar gauges are harder for me to read and it takes me a long time to get used to them. probably another sign of old age. :-P

those star trek instruments might be your cup o' tea, though.

He quotes in his post that it's a 2004. It looks like a surround from a mk3 or newer. Anyone know if the dimensions of the surround changed over the years?
I have had a couple of vehicles with digi dashes ('83 Supra and 94 jimmy). They do tend to be a pain when the sun is behind you but that's just a good excuse to tell the cop " no sir I don't know how fast I was going"

my wife's aerio has the digital cluster, it is pretty awesome
i think it'd be a lot of work fitting it into a swift

Hmm while i like blue that amber is really nice too and probable eye sight friendlier (one eye so blue and too bright is a real problem for me)

I wish we could find out how to get this and if they really work on the geo metro's !!

Dakota Digital will make custom digital clusters if you send them yours. http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=214/category_id=417/home_id=-1/mode=prod/prd214.htm Their new VHX gauges are awesome looking too. That's what I'd use if I was gonna make a custom dash.
