You guys ever wonder what manufacturers like Suzuki do with the molds for interior parts like door panels etc. when a vehicle line/body style goes out of production? Do they throw them away or perhaps sell them to rally teams or companies making CF parts? Food for thought. 8)

From what I have seen, the companies that finish with a model of vehicle usually either throw them away or sell them to other companies. A lot of the higher end model designs from earlier years were sold to China and other industrializing countries.

I mean, just look at how many name variants of the Swift there have been and still are available. Pretty neat to know that 22 years later, the 5 door Sprint is still available as a brand new car in Pakistan.

from what i've seen in the industry, once a manufacturer is done with molds and tooling, they destroy them and write them off. they rarely sell the tooling for scrap because they can take a total write off if they destroy them but have to do the book keeping to add the value of the scrap price back into things.

the gm plant closest to me actually dug pits in the floors of their buildings, dumped the old tooling into them, and poured new concrete over the buried parts.

most manufacturers would never sell their old tooling to a competitor.

Its right. No companies will ever sell the parts to their competitors. It has to bury them or dispose them off.

My bad, turns out I was thinking stolen and not sold. ... s-of-cars/

BTW I own a gen1 xB and the Coolbear looks identical inside and out except for the front which seems to resemble a gen2.

Well, guess I have no choice now but to experiment with making moulds for smaller parts to start. My sister gave me a $600 birthday present. Doesn't mean that i'll have anything worth showing off for a while, but it definitely is a small step forward.

I'd be up for a set of fenders for sure... As long as they fit like OEM and not like those piece of shit ones that 'Cross Canada' sells... I have a set of those, and they don't fit worth a damn... :(
