I'm just doing a quick gauge on how many people would want carbon fiber parts for North American MK2/3 Swifts and the like. At this point in time i'm looking into fabbing some CF fenders and going from there. This will still be a little down the road, but I just want to know if carbon fiber parts are sought after in the Swift community.

Wow. Interesting take on it. Two points as to why I am considering CF. One is the weight reduction and the other is that it would be one less thing to rust. Also I'm not talking about making some super wide body M3 fenders, just oem replacement.

Also, try harder next time, troll.

well you lost my interest right there

agreed a hood and hatch would be nice, but the price is going to need to be low swift owners are cheap so if your looking to do this for a profit there probably wont be much interest.

At this point this is literally just a feeler thread. The dude gave me a quote for the initial creation of the mold and first set of fenders. The mold would be $240 total for both sides and $120 total for both fenders without any profit at all. So at this point I am considering taking the initial hit for the cost of the mold since I would want a set for myself regardless. After that I would see what he would be willing to sell them for if everything turns out proper. I'm sure So i'll keep this thread going to see what people are interested and how much they are willing to pay for a set of fenders or a hood or hatch depending on what we get around to making.

Also, I won't have any new updates on anything until at least March 26th. But keep mentioning the parts everyone would like. At this point I will only be focussing on the MK2/3 Swift/Sprint/Firefly/Metro since I own the pieces for it.

I'd be up for a set of fenders for sure... As long as they fit like OEM and not like those piece of shit ones that 'Cross Canada' sells... I have a set of those, and they don't fit worth a damn... :(

How much did you pay for those? Anyways, we are going to use clean stock Swift fenders, and I am personally going to work with him and the first set will be tested on my car. I think its funny that a CF part maker can make a "some assembly/modification required" part. If it doesn't fit my car, it's going in the trash.

Ahh... they just pressed shit metal with really crappy black primer on em.

I think dropped $140 or so on them, Crappytire wants about $100 or $110 a piece for them... :?

I would be interested In the future when my finances are healthier

All depends on cost considering shipping to the U.K..

Great idea though and i hope you go ahead with it. Anyone developing parts for these cars should be encouraged.

Good luck

The cool thing about this endeavor is that if, it works out right, it could mean potential for a nifty part time job for me. So we'll see how it goes.

Got my car back and was going to take the fenders to the dude, but I quickly found out that my fenders are not going to work. The previous owner who did all the welding work to the car also welded the driver's side fender to the car. So, i'll have to source a clean set from PnP or someone before I can get this endeavour in order.

I'm 32 and therefore an old fart by my 6 yr. old daughter's standards. That said, I no longer recognize the wow factor of CF parts as much as their utilitarian value.

Therefore, I personally don't think that CF fenders are worth the price vis-a-vis weight savings. I'd much more be interested in a CF bonnet(hood), tailgate and dashboard for my MK3. In the case of the latter...this would be an instant hit with many swift/gti owners due to the age and the fact that many of us aren't first owners to take immaculate care of the dashboard from new.

Cheers,
Ralph.

lmfao :rollin: what a tard. But honestly, everyone's entitled to an opinion.

$360 don't seem bad for a set, but yeah, most swift owners are Cheep.
You put out the money, a bit of a profit ain't a bad thing on fenders to
recoup some of your losses for the molds. But really, how much weight
would you save with a set of fenders? I'm strictly MK1 for now, so I'm
not interested, but curious.

Well, after further thought, the CF fenders would be more for rigidity and one less thing to rust out. And i'm sure we all know how bad the fenders are... among other things.

At this point, things won't be going too far for a while since i'll need a set of clean fenders and find a place that sells release agent. The guy who bought all the CF said I have full run at as much cf as I want as long as I can find some release agent. Also, I am looking at what it takes to create a cf hood/trunk. But, like I said, this is just a feeler thread to see what people would be interested in getting for their swifts if the opportuntiy arose.

BTW, thanks for all the good input thus far.

I'd be interested in a hood and fenders for 1991 suzuki. Also would be interested in a hatch for a convertible.

Is this thread just going to be one of those 'feelers' that drags on for years and years without anything coming off of it?

Well it could. I wanted to see what people were looking for and how many people were interested in what. I never said it was going to be immediate since I would still have to learn how to do things right. If you want something sooner, veilside does custom requests as long as there is minimum 20 guaranteed purchases and they would charge around $600 per person for just a hood. I still want to attempt CF stuff but I just need a better paycheck to start playing with molds.

I had a tour of a small local CF fabrication shop many years ago. I believe they were using carnuba wax for a release agent with their products. Do you have access to a local plastics shop for materials?

You might want to do a few test batches making small stuff like gauge pods or mirror housings to get the techniques down. Depending on your materials you might need some vacuum bagging equipment and a baking oven. But I have also seen hand laid CF come out looking really good too.

You guys ever wonder what manufacturers like Suzuki do with the molds for interior parts like door panels etc. when a vehicle line/body style goes out of production? Do they throw them away or perhaps sell them to rally teams or companies making CF parts? Food for thought. 8)
