Hello, I have a 2000 Chevy Metro, came with no tach, went to a junkyard and got 2 diff ones from 96 4-cyl automatics, neither tachs work and in the processes off multi swaps the check engine light came on, haven't read code yet. Any ideas? They came from cars with a distributor to a dist-less; is that an issue? Pls help.

in 1998 the g13 engine started using a different ignition system - no distributor, direct electronic drive with a crank sensor and a cam angle sensor that allowed true sequential injection and 2 channel odd fire ignition.

the signal that drives the tachometer on pre-98 cars is derived from the collapse of the magnetic field in the single coil and the tachometer itself is calibrated for that big spike. the new electronics on the 98 thru 2001 g13 uses a lower voltage coil trigger signal to drive the tach and there is no provision for you to read the actual coil discharge.

if you can find a tach on a 98 thru 2001 car you'd be golden and it would be plug and chug.

i have read that some guys have been successful at changing the calibration on the pre-98 tachs to get them to work. i have not done it so i can't give you any first hand info.
