I just purchased a 8 inch kicker L5 in a baseworx box. I am yet to get a amp but I tryed it on just the deck with no amp, and it was cutting in and out at higher volumes... is this normal with no amp? Or is the sub a dud?

Might be that the sub is a lower impedance than what the deck can handle.

Could you expand on that? Like the sub is too power hungry?

In otherwords the sub wants more juice per watt than the deck can give so the deck says no no no i cant give you that

I just thought that this might also shed some light...

If you have the sub handy.... flip it over and read the magnet.... somewhere it should have a reading for RMS Wattage
this is sometimes also associated with "Continuous Average Power Handling" .... or in relative terms.... what you SHOULD be giving it

Try to remember that UNDERpowering a subwoofer or speaker can ALSO do extensive damage to the voice coil and windings.

Example..... I have 500 watts per door in one of my cars AVAILABLE
.... doesn't mean that I "pin" the Gains on the amp....

it simply means that the amp doesn't have to work as hard to produce GOOD sound.

Keeping that ideology in mind when shopping for any amplifier is useful.
Ergo, always buy more paower than you think you need. Your dynamic range and Headroom will improve dramatically. Having said that, the next logical step is to have a deck with TRUE 5Volt Pre-outs(this doesn't mean collectively 5volts  ) Then, you may want to look at getting a line driver to go in between the deck and amplifier. This will clean up the signal to the amp..... hope this helps
