I was wandering the intertubes when I stumbled upon some 5 channel car audio amps.

Seems like you can get some nice units for pushing a nice system that won't pound the car into vibrating bits. 4x 50w and 1x 200w rms for example.

I want to add a bit more oompf to my speakers, but space and weight are a concern, also only needing one line from the battery. I'm thinking about putting a small 8" or 10" sub in a sealed box and an amp like this should be able to drive one with decent ease.

What do you guys figure?

They work great if your trying to save space. Some of them have very powerful sub channels but for the most part you'll find the typical medium powered units. I will probably go the 5ch route in my 300ZX to save space/clutter and because it just doesn't need to have 1000W in it.

Swift: I am asking in general, also any suggestions as to models, I'm completely green when it comes to car amps. For home use, I have Klipsch 5.1 on the pc, Sennheiser 595s(I can't listen to 128/192kbps or lower mp3 with them because I can hear the signal cuts for compression) for my head, and some nice klipsch 2.0's for the lappy. I'm SQ over SPL, although my Klipsch with it's dual subs will rumble the entire house.

M: I'm in the same boat, don't need to have crazy overly powerful system. I like to listen to my tunes, but there I do admit that the low end could use some extra thump to fill out the bottom end. That and I use the trunk and I tend to have to be able to carry atleast a 3rd person in my car, so the weight and space savings of the 2-in-1 design is very nice, but I don't want to end up with some pos either.

I currently have my 4 Jbl p652s being driven off an old JVC headunit that puts out 19w rms, and has lousy amp properties, 70hz-20,000khz. Speakers can handle 55w rms, so I'm figuring a good medium output amp, that I can hide under the drivers seat would probably do the best job.

A possible option is a Bazooka sub. They used to make one that had satelite outputs for your main speakers. Not sure if they are stil available but it wuold give you the sub and amp in one chassis. As for which brand that will depend on your budget. Infinity makes a small affordable 5ch (something like 50x4 150x1) and on the upper end you have makes like the Alpine PDX-5 that does 75x4 and 300x1 that fetch around the $500-$600 mark.

A 5 channel amp in a size that will fit under a seat nicely will be a tough one to find. I found a nice 5 channel Soundstream on eBay that would fit the bill nicely, but it is 25" wide. Will do some more research though...

Ay... someone ban the spazz...

2 channel amp can run either: Left/Right or Front/Back

4 channel amp runs: Left Front + Right Front + Left Rear + Right Rear

5 channel amp adds a Subwoofer channel.
