I don't know what a Lsi dash looks like, but if it looks like this, it's 4":

Yeah your right they are 4". I had an older set of SAS 4" components that didn't fit the factory opening without a little cutting and it always has me thinking they are 3" speaker holes lol.

I need some good 4" speakers. ive tried all the cheap ones already, they all sound like shit. im a bit of an audiophile and was totally fine with compensating a little for this courier car, but really, I want some good staging. What are those ones peenutz? I dont need bass up front, but I do want some mid bass like guitar and such the 12 wont pick up. I play the 12 to 100hz and bring the fronts in at 80hz. its a fair compensation, but its still really bass heavy and I lack some of the bassy guitar strings. currently using some pioneers and they sound like shit. tried panasonic ones before that werent mine, and they werent as tinny, but I just want something that decent. I only run a front stage and have 100watts rms to give them at 4ohm. recommend me something

Can you tell me where the hole is in the frequency? The 12 should be giving decent output to at least 130Hz and the mids should be playing quite well from there on. Decent 4 inchers can be had from a few makers. Try DLS or Tang Band. They make some pretty good stuff.

I havent hooked it up to proper testing equipment, but with my rather trained ear im lacking between the 120 and 200-250 or so. I can shoot voices and treble like no problem, but it just doesnt like the lower frequencies.

The 12 is a type R getting 1krms (actually) at 1ohm, in a 3cube box tuned for 33-36hz so I dont like playing it up real high. I need a sealed box and more frequencies to the R to sound a little more flat. shits pretty crazy loud though. louder than a few people running 2 10's and over 500watts, so im impressed with the lows, but if I were to listen to some heavy stuff like rammstein, you can tell the differences where the sub plays and the speakers pick up. ive only got a 6band eq, bass ones at 60 and 150, so ive already dropped the 60 3dbs, the 150 is the same at 0, and everything else is dropped. im not a fan of using eq's to boost, more like drop what doesnt need to be boosted. and it sounds better. theres an audiocontrol line driver in there aswell, ive got great snr really... my gains at at like 10% tops

I just dont think I can get the same sound that my 6.5 mbq's produced with a 4" speaker, but no more spending 40$ on a set of speakers thats for sure ;)

You may want to consider going to a 6.5" in the doors then. You can shoehorn a 5.25" in the dash with some fiberglass and a little forethough though. Basicaly the speaker ends up sitting above the factory grill angled towards the opposite corner (drivers speaker points to passenger rear corner and vice versa) for better imaging. You then have to deaden the inside of the dash. Its a little work but the result are pretty decent.

Those are JBL GTO427's. They start at 120Hz, subs end at 70. One would say that I'm missing 50Hz's, but I don't. When I lowered the LPF, I turned up the gain, and that compensates enough.

I've found that using the foam speaker cups you can find from time to time really help with bass reproduction in the dash and in the hatch. You also need to fill the gap between the driver and the dash or all of your bass is gonna get canceled by interference from the back of the speaker...

chris,

as if the 4" speakers in the dash produce any bass in the first place. :-P

i use those kove 4.2s in compaxial and components and even with 150 watts from a hart professional amp and their ample excursion they're dead as a doornail at about 100 hz. i even wedged the huge magnets on the koves into the tracker dash.

i just pulled the foam cups out of ol' blue's dash. one was buzzing pretty good and it drove me nutz. =)

Good point.

What little bass is there is definitely cancelled, then.

Tell me if/when you find some more of those nice 4" speakers you have... I need a pair.
