I'm installing a new head CD unit, replacing an old aftermarket cassette player. After pulling the old unit and comparing the harness to the new one, there are some real conflicts with wire colors.

-There are two pink wires coming out of the dash harness, while there are none on the head unit harness
-There are two sets of white/white & black wires coming out of the dash.
-many green wires on head unit, only two coming from dash
-Couple of blue wires and yellow wires in dash that don't match to anything

And I can't get any wire combination to power the unit. I know the white ones are for power, but neither of them do anything. The older unit worked fine, but this one won't power up at all. What is up here?

Go over them with a multimeter and figure out whats what. Easiest way.

I tried that, but none of the wires showed a voltage, even with the ignition on. If the fuse is blown, which fuse is for the stereo?

I did another voltage test and came up with only the white/black striped wire passing any current. The solid white one has nothing. Shouldn't it be the one that is hot all the time?

And does anyone know what the pink wires are for? :o

White should be constant...dunno about the pink one though...or do you mean the pink one is on the deck's harness?

The Pink wires are coming from the dash. I'm going to check up behind there to see if the white wire got severed somehow. It isn't hot at all..

If this is for your '92 Metro, here's the wiring sheet.

Constant 12V+ White
Switched 12V+ White/Black
Ground Black
Illumination Red/Yellow
Dimmer Red/Green
Antenna Driver's Pillar
Front Speakers 4" Dash
Left Front (+) Orange
Left Front (-) Orange/Black
Right Front (+) Red
Right Front (-) Red/Black
Rear Speakers 4" Side Panels
Left Rear (+) Green/White
Left Rear (-) Green/Black
Right Rear (+) Gray/White
Right Rear (-) Gray/Black

Strangely, there are no red/green wires at all in the dash. No red/yellow ones either.

the white wire seems to be connected, but there's no current coming through it! It is crazy because the older stereo got power to it. It had to come from ONE of those wires...

Also unusual is a small black box that is clamped onto the solid red, yellow and black wires. It says "filter" on it. The wires run through it and out the other side to the stereo. What is this thing?

These wires are driving me nuts!! :vibe:

Can you get a pic of it? It sounds as if though somebody has already been in there. The filter is likely just to supress any AC noise thats coming up the line.

Yeha.
When I installed my CD deck in my 91 Metro, the stock wiring harness was stuck waaaaaaaaay back into the dash and didn't find it till pulling on the craptastic tape deck harness.

Haven't had a chance to snap a pic of it, but I did find the ORIGINAL harness stuck way in the back like Eric was describing. It contains all of the correct colored wires, except for one. Instead of a Red/Green dimmer wire, there is another black wire in its place. I'm guessing that it still is the dimmer wire though.

Haven't solved the problem of the constant 12 volt wire though, it shows no voltage reading. I've also noticed that I've knocked out my dash illumination in the process of fiddling with this. Is there a fuse for the constant voltage, besides the radio one?
