Post subject:  2000 GLS - Removing stock stereo?

Hey guys, got my first car. A 993cc Suzuki Swift 2000 model.

I've bought a new stereo to go in the system, but I can't get the old unit out. Does anyone know how? Do I need to pull the dash out?

Thanks,
Lewis

there is a black plastic bezel around the space for center vents, heater controls, and the radio. remove the screws holding that to the dash and carefully pry the bezel free of the top (over the vents and held captive by steel clips.) you will also need to pull the knobs off the heater control sliders. mind the wiring for the illumination lamp for the heater controls and be especially careful if your car has air conditioning. the a/c switch is very fragile.

under the bezel you should see the 4 screws that hold the radio cage in place. remove those and the cage should pull out to allow you to access the aerial cable and wiring connectors.

there are 4 screws that hold the radio inside the cage and 2 for the 1/2 din compartment (if you have that in the european market car.)

you have to bear in mind that there are sometimes big variances between the cars you got and the cars that the north american market got.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I've removed the black frame around the center piece and still the stereo cage won't come out. I can't see any other screws holding it in either, are specialist tools required or just the trusty old screwdriver?

Thanks.

Sorry for the double post:

I managed to get the stereo out. For future people searching for the same thing, note that there are four metal "pins" around the stereo cage that stop it falling pulling out. 2 are on the top, 2 on the sides. Push them in and you can pull the stereo out.

and that, no doubt, is one of the variances.

the cars in the sf413 chassis style over on this side of the pond were built in what we call the mk2 type from 1989 thru 1991. then there were some styling changes which included the dash and interior for the mk3 92 thru 94 model years. after 94 the hatchback's chassis and interior was entirely re-worked for the 95 model year and that body style was carried thru 2000. they also made what you would call a 4 door saloon that was built another year, into the 2001 model year, to satisfy purchase contracts that had been written by car rental companies.

for the world market cars including european production, suzuki carried the sf413 chassis type with regular styling updates all the way into the 2000 model year and somewhat beyond. i was able to buy some parts wholesale that had been left after production of the sf413 type was discontinued in an assembly plant located in hungary.

anyway, i'm happy to hear that you accomplished what you had set out to do. thanks for following up your post with what worked for you as it adds to the knowledge base and helps define the variances found in markets other than the north american market.
