what you guts think?

paid 350 for it,1.0 auto, idles good, but when put in gear you have to pump the gas to keep it going, will not run with pressure sensor hooked up.
147 comp on all 3.181,xxx km.broken drivers door handle,window track(suprise suprise)

he bought it to fix it,gave up on it.he put new cap,rotor,wires,plugs,f/filter,and a head gasket(thats the reason he got it,needed h/g).girl owned it before him,her mech plugged map sensor with a golf tee, told her it was fixed,"just pump gas to keep it going"

why cant these "mechanics" fix stuff properly,or just say that they are stumped?

not much rust underneath, thats why i bought it,no body damage, clear title.going to be my future turbo project.but for now i want to try to get it running properly, maybe 3rd daily driver?

funny it was only on "kijiji" for 20 minuites before i looked at it. car has no fault codes, only a 12(all clear)

seller was honest enuf, made a deal on a handshake the day before, paid for it after it was loaded on trailer.good guy to deal with.

charging battery, tinker on it on sunday, have to remove turbo pontiac from my garage to work on this one.

also has command start,spiral-cell battery, sony cassette deck  (whats that?)infinity speakers all around,14"tires&wheels(good rubber,185/60/ must have been gutless with 14" on it,being an automatic.

found a 100 watt halogen trouble light in the hatch, and a old REALISTIC boombox/8 track player  found owners manual, previous owner actually filled it out, kept fairly good care of the car.
seats in decent shape, but might use the extra blue turbo seats i have, will match paint nicely.

Post subject:  Re: santa came early

did some fooling around on the geo today, changed tps, bumped up timing, fixed broken pcv;BUT still will not stay running when put in gear.....unhooked vac line from map sensor, car runs fine, but unplug map entirely, and she dies.

tested other sensors,m.a.t. sensor is WAY OUT,book says if its under 100 ohms to throw it out, mine reads 4.6~4.7 ohms.
plus after running car for .5 hour,i checked for codes, and a 14 came up....coolant temp sensor(in throttle body)

off to the wreckers i go...

Post subject:  Re: santa came early-now a lump of coal...

car blows lots of oil from pcv/oil filler cap/exhaust ports, plus lots of bubbles in rad while its running.looks like the motor will come apart again, previous owner re-used headbolts,i would not be suprised if he re-used h/gasket.lots of oil leaking from cam seal as well.
i bought a new t/body temp sensor, flushed cooling system, but now it smokes like a bitch afteryou rev it up a few times.did not do this when i first got it,only other thing i did was fill up the oil,it was 1.5 litres low...but not smoking...the other owner had the head off, maybe lost the check ball/valve,wrong h/gasket?

i'm just going to tear this motor apart, see whats up with it.

oil is running out of the exhaust ports.....

PULLED cyl head from geo tonight, previous owner RE-USED h/gasket and bolts  cheap bastard
lots of silicone on the sealing surfaces
dropped pan to pull pistons, old cork gasket  must have been re-built at one time.
8) previous re-build confirmed:.5MM oversized pistons!!! 8)

no rust under car as well!!! 8)
 damaged crank pulley(ran loose) damaged crank sprocket(1 bolt missing,1 wrong bolt(sae thread)2 broken off bolts.

shop found some porosity in the head :| above the valve seat by the guide, now i need to get it pressure tested(was going to do that anyways).having a hard time finding rings for the larger pistons.block is a 1989,so the motor has been rebuilt/replaced

The ebay auctions can usually also get the over-size rings.

If you don't mind paying a bit more, Rock Auto sells ring sets of the various sizes.

Don't feel bad, you could have had this happen to your coolant in less than a month:

Draining a coolant system sucks when it's like -15c outside... :(

I've built hundreds of those heads, and never seen a leaker. Some of the Japanese (built) castings were pretty bad, but none of them leaked. The castings in the Canadian built cars are quality pieces, and 100 times better.

runs not too bad now, needs a few other minor things.struts,t-stat,tranny flush, muffler
maybe get rid of the sony cassette deck..... whats a cassette deck?
oh and the small brakes SUCK!!!! :(

Post subject:  Re: santa came early-blue lump of coal

300 km so far and it mostly seems well....blew out a crank seal 2 weaks ago(small crack in seal) fixed that up.
install new struts, and bigger brakes on the front.stops better now.
today i went out to rotate the tires, plus also noticing that the e-brake handle comes up pretty high,i figured i would check the rear brakes.
DAMN!almost metal on metal on one side!!other side had a leaky wheel cylinder!wtf beauty is only skin deep!at least i had good brakes and drums from a t-3 i stripped out awhile ago!BUT could only find 1 wheel cylinder in town! 40 bucks!! oh well

now the car stops even better! 8) but i used my last 2 new castle nuts on the rear.... :x now i gotta buy more of them......

car seems to be pretty good on gas :D .....but not as fun as a t3  its a metro automatic, what more can get out of it? short of mounting a rocket to the roof.......
next up tranny flush,t-stat,adj timing,(maybe move sprocket around 1 tooth)wash motor real well and see if i can find that last oil leak.......flush heater core...
moving soon, will be losing my current internet service on the 18th....that sucks.

i went to adjust timing on the car, made no difference, broke a bolt off in the crank sprocket so i guess i'm done for now.all my large tools are packed, just left with basic vise no drill press no compressor.....fuck this metro i want my turbo back!
oh and the comp was only 110,100, not even 500 km on the motor yet.....

Do you have any knock like sounds? Tapping?

Also, I hate to ask... How were the bores? Did you deglaze?

What kind of oil are you running? Might try, picking up some AC/Delco Oil Supplement and adding half to the crank case.

Post subject:  Re: santa came early-blue lump of coal

finally got her up and running, managed to get the broken bolt out and save the threads in the crank sprocket :D tried the timing in a few different spots, finally settling on one tooth advanced on the cam.

starting to sound like a loose crank bearing, maybe #1 cyl......but it does not do it all the time, only when around 3,000 rpm,but it shuts up at idle.....need to get me an oil pressure gauge
petro-can dino oil,5-30.only 464 km on the re-build so far.YES,i did de-glaze the cylinders.
last motor i used a zinc based oil additive at break-in time, this motor i did not.....wonder if that made a difference......i'll do a comp test at the shop with a different gauge, maybe mine is no good....still need to do that tranny flush....MOVING SUCKS

my last day in this house is friday june 3rd.borrowing wireless internet from my buddy 2 houses away, and it is not the most reliable  oh well its free for high-speed where i'm moving to  but its 10 acres with a 2300 sq ft house(one level) and a 30x40 shop 8)

but the car is damn good on gas

You guys have cheap gas in Alberta... :p

Yeah, the Zinc additive probably helps the rings to seat properly. I washed out cylinder 3 on mine, added some Zinc additive to some 0w30 Esso XD-3, and it pulled #3 back into line with all the rest. Too bad it didn't help with a shoddy valve job...

Me and my gravel parking pad and jealous of your shop.

:( so the car currently is sitting at work,on jack-stands with the motor removed, torn apart top to bottom :x

not even 600 km on the motor and it was knocking so bad i had to trailer it to rod hammered out,no.3 not much better...... SOMEHOW I PUT THE  WRONG  PISTON/CAP in the wrong damn hole  #3 piston/rod/cap is in the #2 hole,#2 is in the #3 hole

i had them numbered on the tops,(l,ll,lll) but somehow i f$%#@^ up

steal MORE parts from my spare turbo block(crank)shop has to re-size rods, rings are still good at least.3rd time its been out/ oil pump while its apart.installing a FULL set of gauges to monitor system vitals.will use zinc additive again.
 never fails if it looks good,it runs like shit.....looks like shit, but runs great!!!!

....AND THE CAR LOOKS GOOD......

Wow, thats a mess man. Never seen one go that far south that fast!
Zinc helps the highest friction components as a last defense against metal to metal contact, particularily in an old school style v8 engine at the lifter/cam during break in. Feel free to use it, but it will not aid in your success or the longetivity of your engine. I think the whole oil and filter thing is way over analyzed by folks(let the arguements begin!). Why do I think this? After hundreds of g series engines rebuilt/refreshed, regular, any old brand, 5w30 oil and not one problem with ring seal, bearings etc. They just need oil, and oil changes, but all the rest is unnecessary, trust me.

been busy at work,14+ hour days away from home.been working at the BIG mall outside of calgary(crossiron mills)

put motor togethor on canada day, purrs like a kitten, seems to have more power

:?: but the oil pressure sucks! 58 cold, 8 psi hot..... :?

no more taking it apart, just going to drive it.getting tired of this car.will soon be repairing the t-fly body work.

maybe turn this metro into a turbo clone this winter.......

seems to be running fine now, almost 2000 km on motor.
uses 10 litres of gas to drive 128 km round trip, home to work then back.....a little much i figured, would like to see 6 litres or less.....
but the car is a automatic, even with bigger tires it screams at 100 kmh.......could use a tach in the dash for shits n giggles....
i can hit 140 kmh, but with the auto she REALLY screams
been working 80 (+/-) hours a week these last few weeks,no time to test different settings on the car....
but my paychecks are good 8)

only 140kmh ? i hit 170kmh with my 3 speed. the needle was fully pegged out with plenty of pedal travel left.

Post subject:  Re: santa came early-blue lump of coal

update- car is running well,no power as usual (automatic :( )not using any oil.
put new winter skinnys on,fuel mileage went up.
changed heater core, now the car throws heat like crazy!what a pain to change, but worth it now that its -22 outside!
flushed the old core 6 times but it still would not let water hardly pass thru it.....full of black silicone from p.o.......he re-used the h/gasket,sealing it up with gobs of silicone  found silicone everywhere that the a/freeze went thru.rad replacement may be next.has been flushed out lots, but the engine temp seems high for a 180* t-stat.
studded winter tires are noisy, but i drive 115 km a day, wanted to be safe not the tires were almost free, and i did not pay for mount/balance/studding.buddy system for that.
the guys at work leave all their empties laying around,so i clean them up.pays for beers after work, but this time i bought tires for myself.hey i'm the shop mech,if they want it fixed i need to show up for work.....

Post subject:  Re: santa came early-blue lump of coal

car was running great until last monday......noticed hesitation/stalling at higher rpms.i ran the fuel tank really low,so i just figured it was just a dirty/plugged f/filter.....WRONG!!!!changed filter,no difference still runs crappy.
next day at work i hooked up the fuel pressure tester(thinking weak pump, regulator)
results for pressure test were as spec in the book.BUT....i did notice something odd.....

while i had the f/pressure tester hooked up,with the air cleaner top off,i would crack the throttle open to see if the pressure goes up on the tester.thats when i noticed raw fuel being blown OUT of the throttle body

the engine WILL NOT rev up to the rev limiter point;instead it hits 5,000 rpm, cuts out for almost 3 seconds, then starts revving up again till 5000 rpm, cuts out for 3 seconds, and on and on.....all the while the injector DOES NOT STOP SPRAYING FOR THE 3 SECONDS,therefore blowing the gas back out the tbi  no fuel cut
then today i noticed LOTS of timing 'ping',i stopped to adjust the dizzy only to find the timing NON-ADJUSTABLE! :? no matter which way i turned the dizzy, fully retarded or fully advanced, there was NO CHANGE in the idle quality at all,NONE.

drove it home.changed dizzy, coil, amplifier for coil,cap/rotor/wires.NO CHANGE,still runs crappy.cannot adj timing at all, seems to be at a ''fixed'' value.NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. NEXT TO CHECK:tps, map, iat, maybe the egr..... any thoughts, people?
1992 geo metro 1.0 (auto :( ) bored 20 over decked head 40 thou port polish 3TECH cam,gear.....

Man, you have some really seriously bad luck! Ive been around lots and dont have much for your current symptoms. Check the crank bolt, cam bolt etc, sure sounds like something is moving around knocking things out of time.
