So, since july I've been working on an 89 GTi I acquired and I thought it's time to share some info.

Long story short; I bought 2 gti's, a drag one (with cage and all) and a donor car.
Drag GTI had no engine, trans or anything. It was basicly a shell. FYI it ran a best time of 12.7 with turbo. The donor car had a bone stock engine with no trans. I did have a spare trans so that was no problem.
Anyway, over the last year or two I have been buying some (performance) parts and I'm gonna be using them all on this project.

After we (me and my mechanic) started working on the drag gti, we noticed the shell was pretty much rotten. The donor car was in much better shape. So I decided to use donor car as the project car. We had to take out the already build engine out of the drag and put it in the donor car. Along with ecu harness and suspension and a lot of other bits and pieces.
Even though the donor car was in better shape, a lot of work did go into the shell.
But finally on oktober 3 the engine started for the first time. Today the engine ran again and kept idling.

Some info on the engine:
JE 75mm 11:1 pistons.
Head was shaved (not much) and ported.
3tech cams (222/365).
Cultus intake manifold.
Genie headers.
Suzukird underdrive crank pulley
Sandros Chip (210/340)
Aluminum flywheel
Altezza 1g-fe tb (55mm)
Vitara SGP headgasket.

I still have to install an apexi S-afc and an AEM wideband air/fuel ratio gauge.
Still waiting for a monster tach with shiftlight and oil pressure, water temperature and oil temperature gauges.
Under the dash there's pretty much nothing. lol. I took everything out.

Suspension in the front are KYB gr2 with cut springs (1.25) and rear are 1.5.
Also there is an upper strut brace and also a lower one.
Rims are the suzuki 7 spokes ones (not installed on the car yet).

On the body I have the fender flares which are copies of the suzuki ones. A front bumper lip (strider) and a double gti wing. Two wings were bolted to each other and then fibered to make it look as one wing. It's longer than one wing.

Dashboard and indoor panels were sprayed bumper black.

Anyway, here are a few pics.

Sorry, car is still very dirty. It still has to be sanded down / prepped to be sprayed. I think I'm going to spray it the same blue as my Altezza.
We still have to figure out a few things like if the TPS is actually doing anything. We used the altezza tps but it's a 3 wire tps. The GTI is a 4 wire tps. So we left one of the wires unplugged. I think it was the white one.
Engine does run but i think it should work better with the GTi tps...
At the end of the month I'm going with a 50mm tb. Maybe it will run better. But damn it does rev FAST to 8600rpm.

Feel free to ask anything. 8)

Will this be a street car, or strictly track?

This will be a track car. Street legal season is almost over. Than it will start again after carnaval next year. Strictly track? no. I want to be able to drive it once in a while on a sunday.

Drove it today. Engine idles steady at @900rpm. Engine revs smooth and quick to redline.
Ignition timing is yet to be set up properly. It can take more timing (advance).
Still need to install the wideband afr and the apexi.

School is starting again tomorrow so I'll work on the car again next weekend.

What engine bearings (size and type) are you using, and what head gasket is that pictured?

Nice build...keep it up!

Great looking project. Where did you get that lower front bumper lip from? I like how it looks!

Well they're just stock bearings.
Head gasket is a vitara head gasket (genuine).

8)

We put them on stock timing. My mechanic contacted the guy who will degree them. Car has to obviously go to his garage.

Mike the engine will start faster now with the gt tb and tps. Muuchh better now. Idles now is rock steady at 1k rpm.
I want to properly clean the injectors and maybe a better fuel pump.

About the cams, any info i might need to know to pass to the one who will degree them?

Installed an AEM wideband O2 sensor and gauge today. Also a glowshift adjustable shift light.

Here are some pics.

I'm running the sandros chip for a couple of years now. So far it's been amazing. But I noticed at idle afr is around 17.8-18:1. Isn't this too lean? Or this just might be normal.

Funny you ask because actually there is. I really wanted to test this engine on the quarter mile so last week i decided to switch motors in the gti's.
So this project engine went into the '91 gti.
But before it got in i got the 222/365 cams dialed in.
There are no marks on the adjustable cam gears so the guy had to take off the valve cover and with gauges, degree wheel, calculator he did his thing. Took 1.5 hours.
The settings: intake centerline 107.5 and exhaust centerline 110.
I didn't finnish in time to test it last week cause the engine didn't want to start. In the proces we kinda fucked a dizzy.
A few days later we sorted out the problem. But i'm missing a dizzy for the other engine now, which i have one on it's way.
Ignition timing is set at 8 degrees advance.
The car is a fucking beast. Idles strong and solid. Revs to 8600 in milliseconds. Spins 1st and 2nd gear like it's nothing. Kind of gets going in 3th gear after spinning. It's amazing.
Tomorrow i want to change the timingbelt and later at night hopefully go to the track.

As for the project gti, i didn't put the engine in it yet. Maybe tomorrow. I also have an ecu harness i'm gonna change because i want It to be able to read the O2 sensor. It still isn't painted although i already bought the paint a long time ago.

I think i'll have to change my sig now. 8)

That's cool man, let us know what times you get at the track. Btw you said the cars spins the WHOLE second gear or only when dripping the clutch?

Unfortunately i didn't get to race at the track. I did go but that night it was a continuation of 2 weekends ago. 2 weekends ago an official died that night and they canceled the whole thing. Only cars that were present that night got to race last weekend.
My dad with his geo metro mk4 with gt swap also went and my sis with her 2010 swift.
Got to wait now for the next event.

My gti will spin whole 2nd gear. I got it filmed today and i just have to upload it now. 8)
At 5k rpm the power will come on pretty hard all the way to redline.

Not the best video, but you kind of get the idea.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1CJfjJ ... ata_player

Above video you can see what the car does in second gear. Power comes on really powerful at 4500-5000 rpm and it spins the wheel. I didn't push 3th gear because of traffic and cops.
Mods include: 11:1 pistons and 3tech 222/365 with intake centerline dialed in at 107.5 degrees and exhaust centerline 110 degrees.

I also uploaded another video of 1st and 2nd gear pull.

I still have to make a better acceleration video.

I think it's ironic how people always end up going the turbo route... It's like an insatiable hunger for power 8). Although choose the turbo from the beginning is easier on your wallet, going through the different stages is what makes it fun!
I'm sure you'll enjoy what's coming man... I can't say I'm not jealous!
