Thanks to the historical documentary “Smokey & the Bandit” I grew up believing the greatest performance car possible was the Pontiac Trans-Am.

Then, one day, I got to strap one on. 6.6 liters of thundering American fury, delivering literally tens of horsepower to a chassis set up to outmatch the finest riding lawnmowers Albania could produce.

I could feel it rusting around me as I stomped the throttle, the three-speed tranny lurching me forward until the glacier I was racing caught me and ruined my traction.

I decided it was time to go to a real performance car, so I scanned the skies until I saw the magic letters G-E-O

Teenagers in the 80's were inspired by the Trans Am for a few other reasons!

The '79 trans am used an Oldsmobile 403 with 185 net horsepower.

Power to weight ratio was pretty similar to a good running G10 Metro.

Of course the metro didn't have the t-tops or screaming chicken decal on the hood. :-P

I'm sure I remember it wrong. But I think the 'ole 6.6 (400 inch) in the '76 Trans Am was rated around 180ish hp and it weighed a little over 3,800 pounds. My brothers g/f had some Oldsmobile Cutlass tank set up like it but with the 455 and it would roast the tires. But he tweaked it for her.
I'd bet that any Hollywood car was seriously worked on and had twice or three times that.

Back then, I was driving a '69 Mustang Coupe that I'd put a 351 C 4V, four bolt main engine into. It would chirp the tires at 60 mph with it's C-4.

Awesome new car.. based on Camaro chassis, right?

It's amazing how Firebird once had an engine as weak as a 2.5 iron Duke 4 cylinder .

And now even 600 hp is no big deal..

They could have designed it with rectangular headlights. Just sayin'.

When we compare the H.P of V8 of the 80's, the G13b had half the Hp of many V8's... not bad back then.
