Hi guys this is my first time posting on a forum like this but I'd like some ideas on what's wrong with my geo metro. I have a 1994 base automatic. The problem is that it vibrates a lot in reverse, neutral and sometimes in drive and the check engine lights on. The check engine light came back as code 55 which if I'm not mistaken is for the ECM. So could the ECM be causing the vibrations? Also a remanufactured ECM costs a lot for me atleast so would It be a bad idea to get one from a junkyard?

First thing first, do a compression test, preferably hot and cold. Your initial symptoms of vibrating are typical of one cyl with low compression. Often more noticed with automatics than standards initially.
Ecu failure is incredibly rare. It would be the last thing I'd suspect. What does code 55 say it's for specifically? More common to 92 up models is egr throwing codes and setting light off and on, which may be a terribly big deal. Plugged passages are usually the cause of that. Anyways, sort out whether the engine itself is healthy before anything else.

I'm thinking Motor mount ...... If you can find a buddy or neighbor or anyone you can trust
Pull hard on park brake
have them put it in revers while you have the hood open see if the engine jumps around when (said friend apply a little gas)

Thank guys I tryed the motor mount test and it seemed fine there was little rocking. So I don't think it's the mounts. The code is spacificly for resetting ECM or ECM failure. The shaking hits it's peak when ever it has to downshift. How would I know if it's egr or not? And could I do a compression test at home it would I have to take it to a shop?
