All,

Been a while since I posted, but the car's been running well, so lurking is all I really had need for.

Until now.

My 1990 Sprint Turbo has developed a problem in which it refuses to idle. It starts fine, it runs fine if I'm on the gas, but the moment I get off the gas, it's like I switched the car off. It doesn't even attempt to hold idle, the tach just winds down to zero.

Any thoughts?

Joe

2 things come to mind.

a really dirty air filter or a nearly completely clogged catalytic converter.

The cat is all but new, but I'll check the air filter and check back -- thanks!

Look for a vacuum leak
If the filter is that dirty, it will do the opposite. Idle fine, but not rev up

Check for codes.
What was the last thing you did to the car before it started screwing up?

SOLVED!

Turns out the rubber hoses on the turbo intake were completely shot and leaking VERY badly. After removing them and "repairing" them (duct tape -- I'll replace that with electrical tape later and start looking for proper, new replacements), the car runs beautifully.

Thanks for pointing me at the airbox, I would not have found the problem otherwise.

Vac leak. Surprise

The turbo motors are sealed, so if they won't idle, but otherwise run OK, 9 times out of 10 it's a vac leak

I know, huge surprise, right?

;)

Now, does anyone know where I can buy solid pipes and silicon couplers for the rubber that connects the airbox to the turbo intake on a '90 Sprint?
