I just switched my '97 engine that was burning a quart of oil every 300 miles to an XFi engine (91?) that I had laying around. I didn't really have any problems, except that I now can't get the 'new' engine to run because the spark is intermittent. It is because the earlier engine doesn't have the crank position sensor?? There is an intermittent spark that will pop-off a couple of cylinders, but the engine won't run because the spark won't keep going. I tested it straight off the coil, and proved it was only going at first try cranking it around, then no spark. The dizzy cap, wires, etc. are all fine. Can the XFi engine control module be simply plugged into my later '97 car??

Time for more parts, or an OBD2 equiped engine. You'll need to add a crank sensor setup. Will require a good amount of parts from your other engine and get another oil pump. It's not advised to use a pump from a blown engine, but you can use all the other parts. Someone did a complete rightup first hand, but I don't remember who did it. Search around some.

Was it you T3 ragtop???

EDIT: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=40019&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=crank+sensor

Here is one of the rightups to swap OBD1 to OBD2. Applies to both 1.0 and 1.3

Thanks guys, I think it will be the easiest thing to do simply to take the lower drive cog and crank sensor 'stuff' off my old engine, and put it on the XFi engine I put in the car, along with the alternator, water pump pulley, oil pump and whatever else ends up necessary.
