I've finished rebuilding the 4 Cylinder G13B engine in my 97 Geo Metro, but have another issues that I can't seem to narrow down.

I'm currently running a rebuild head and rebuit block that included boring the cylinders, new pistons and rings, gaskets etc.

The car runs great, back up to getting around 38 mpg (city/hwy combo). When the car first starts no issues, no smoke. After it has run enough to reach normal operating temps it continues to run clean when the rps are aprox 2000 or better. After I come to a stop and let the engine back down to idle speed when I start to move again I will get a puff of smoke. I will sometimes get this when shifting to 2nd, if I let the engine speed drop to low. I'm guessing on the rpms since this car does not have a tac.

The engine runs strong, but in any case I will do a compression test and at the same time check the plugs to see if this is across all cylinders, or just one or two.

As I progress into the trouble shooting, anyone have any similar issues? Someone mentions the Oil Check Valve, but I don't know enough about it's function to see if that is a concern or not.

Just thought I'd mention that my oil puff was a bad PCV valve. From what I read in Chilton there is an oil pump Pin installed between the pump and the block and the Relief Valve/spring/retainer/retainer ring assembly that installs from under the pump.

Assuming the rings gaps were off set on the rebuild, personally... I'd give it 750-1000 miles or more to wear in.

I agree! Let that engine break in. It takes time and change the oil after 500 miles, then again in 1000 miles.
