I have a 95 geo xfi 3 cyl 5 speed good condition, I want to put it in my 96 geo same set up 3 cyl 5 speed anyone know if its pretty straight forward, or any differences? the only issue I have with the 96 engine is that it doesn't pass smog & burns oil.

p.s. sorry for the double post...

Your '96 has OBDII so all you can swap is going to be the block. You'll need your crank shaft position sensor and other stuff. Why not just get a compression test, Dry and wet, wide open throttle and see if it's rings or valves.Valves would be a head swap or rebuild and head gasket, I recommend 3Tech The re-ring can be done without removing the engine, maybe over a weekend.

You could try Seafoam a few times to see if it's a stuck ring but doubtful. The oil may be clogging the Cat. converter and O2 sensors. Start with a compression check.
Head Repair...

Have fun,
