Hello all,
I have just purchased an 89 GTI and the engine needs some help. I have found an engine from a 95 Swift (1300 DOHC) that has low miles. Does anyone know if this will swap straight in or if there are differences?
Thanks in advance.

If both are GT/GTi, then there shouldn't be any differences in engine mounting.... but i'm pretty sure GT engines were only in swifts until 94 in North America? Correct me here someone... There's also a 1300 16v SOHC, but the DOHC only came in GT's.

If you use the harness and ECU from the 95 aswell, you shouldn't have any issues there either.

What's wrong with the 89 engine though? Seems like it might be easier to re and re the bottom end (assuming that's what's wrong) than putting in a whole new engine? Hard to tell without knowing the issue though.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I also think that the DOHC wasn't available after 94, so the fellow might just have the year wrong. It's definitely the 1300 twin.
I probably will just rebuild the current engine, but I don't know any history of the car or what has been done to it previously and can't help but think about all options. I only paid $200 for the car so I really can't complain. Originally I thought the misfiring was due to long overdue tune-up related issues, but now have determined that oil is getting into #1 and #4. Further testing tomorrow should identify the problem.

have you seen a pic of the engine? many many people mistake a 16v engine with a twin cam 16v engine. also there are many listing errors when looking for parts. if it's really a DOHC motor then it was swapped, and it's older than the car. you won't know how many miles it really has.

Here's a photo of that engine. the more i look at it, i really can't believe it only has 15k. It apparently came out of a rollover, so could have been sitting exposed for many years...

I would be wary about that motor from the pic it looks like the timing belt is missing, I bought a motor like that from a wrecking yard for 500 and it had a broken valve, I should have pulled the head but started it up and destroyed one piston and the block.
