ok i have been searching for information on swapping a mk2 1990 1.3 sohc for a mk2 1989 dohc for hours, now im seeing double. :? I have the engine harness and it plugs into the chassis harness. is it plug and play if you stay between the mk's? i have found a ton of mk2 to mk3 or visa versa but have not found anything for matching mk swaps. ps i put some pics in my album

i have been looking at my chilton wiring diagrams for most of the day, minus the egg hunt :D . i did see that the plug is the same plug but the pin outs are diffrent. iv been tryin to figure out what the wires and there for but the wiring diagram i have dosn't have them. im not afraid of splicing wires but im having a serious mental block on the wiring.

I just did one, the only thing that you may find is that the dash harness won't have the same connectors to hook to the chassis harness. I had to use the gti dash harness as well. I was swapping from 89 gti to 90 Sprint. After I did that it was plug and play, rear harness plugged right in.

the gti harness plugs into the gti ecu and the dash harness but it looks like the pin outs are diffrent. can it be because i have the 1.3 sohc of the same year as the car 89?

an 89 and a 90 are the same, mk2. you need a mk2 gt engine bay wiring harness to interface the sensor pack on the engine to the ecu. that's the easy way to go. the harder way would be to remove all the pins from the ecu coupler connectors and put them in the correct order.

you will also need to do some re-wiring for the ignition system where the gt coil and ignitor replace the sohc engine's coil. consult the gti wiring schematic for specifics on the ignition. basically, you can used the brown/ white and black/ white wires that are currently on the chassis harness for key switched ignition power. use the electrical noise filter from a parts car splice between the ground wire from the gt ignitor to chassis ground. the brown wire from the ignitor is the tach output which has to run back to the ecu as well as the brown wire on the instrument harness connector to supply the signal for the tach. from the engine harness, you have to break out the orange ignition trigger wire and add a length of wire to connect it to the orange wire on the ignitor connector. that's the signal from the ecu to fire the ignition.

the only other connectors to be concerned with are the one behind the battery which connects the chassis, mostly power circuits, and the instrument cluster harness at the base of the steering column.

i have the gti chassis harness, and everything plugs in but the pin outs on the green instrament cluster are not in the same place, i have a guy buyin my 8v and the whole harness so i won't be splicing my harness. but i have only found info on splicing for missmatched mk's.

Ok i have decided to splice my harness insted of replacing the harness under the dash and in the fenders. i have figured out how to get a signel to the coil/ ignitor, and the idiot light for oil pressure. the only other part is the conections to the gti harness to the gl body under the dash and under the fuse box. the pin outs are wrong and so is the wire colors. they are both mk2, shouldn't the wire colors be the same?

EDIT i must have been on drugs or just tired, the green plug matched perfect.

It runs on the gl pump but when i put the gti pump in what do ya know its bad. pulled it out and ran it right off the batt. can i run the smaller fuel pump for a few days or will it be too lean or cut out?

the small pump won't work well with the twincam. i've tried and, personally, i wouldn't bother trying to run it without the gt pump.

well it idled at 2000 till warm then hunted between 15 and 2000rpms. it never idled below 13-1500. solved it by removing the idle air control valve on the back of the intake. it idles at 850 just fine now but the tps needs some adjusting as i don't have a multimeter that shows milliohms. I need to remove the lifters and give them a good cleaning. and get a new lower cover to set timing. its set by ear now.

I had the same issue only because I had my idle screw set to 1300. I put it down to 900 after I got the electrical issue sorted out which was causing the engine to sputter and die. The car still does that jumpy idle when i'm over a certain speed in neutral before the car warms up. Once its warm the idle stops jumping.

What did you use to block off the valve port?
