Hey guys, just been trying to figure out how to keep the family car.
Currently have a 1988 swift, sa310, g10 998cc and cylinder.
Its a 5speed manual but first gear has shat itself.
Ive decided that if i cannot find another gearbox (been looking but NZ seems to have a shortage of 5speed manual gearboxes for a g10) i want to put a new engine in. At first i was thinking just putting a g13 in, but as my car has done just over 111000kms i want an engine that has done less, its hard to find. so was wondering if anyone knows of anyone or has put a newer engine, like 90's in a little 3door hatch like mine? or if anyone has any pointers??

whats your thoughts on this???

any input is highly appreciated.

p.s the car is full of memories so dont want to 'just buy another'

thanks

Can you find a tranny from a 1.3l car of the same era? Over here they were used from 85-88. The final drive ratio may be different but it should still fit the car. You do have the tranny with the aluminum cover and the dip stick?

I sold this car to a friend at work. I now have a Saturn L which is an Opel Vectra B.

Yes, you can use the 4cyl model gearbox, it just has a 3.52 final drive as opposed to the 4.1 in your car, however you never answered my question about the 'ear' for the stabiliser rod, if you want to change to the 4 cyl engine then you also need the gearbox, gearbox crossmember and driveshafts.
The easiest thing is to stick your existing gearbox on a small pellet and drop it off to mainfreight and send it to me in Christchurch and I'll fix it, seems strange that it has only done 111,000kms and has broken first gear, with the low/no power 3 cylinder they are usually good for 250,000kms.

What do you think Mercedes or BMW can we use for family car. Anyway I don't think so and I didn't ever see that anyone is using Mercedes for his family use.

I have My own car rental and I often use Ford and Nissan companies cars. Which they specially design for the family purpose.
