This is keeping from getting my Virginia inspection: no reverse lights.

I checked one of the bulbs, it was fine. I checked the 15 amp fuse labeled BACK in the interior fuse block.

So I'm thinking it might be the "backup switch" located on top of the transmission? Is this just a matter of unscrewing the old one and screwing in a new one... they look they run about $20 from the dealer.

Thoughts?

98 1.3 manual.

I had the exact same thing on the exact same car. Just replaced the switch. Same as replacing a sparkplug, actually easier, it's not down in that six inch tunnel.

I've ordered the switch online from a dealer in Texas, $16.44 plus $8 shipping. It will take a few days to receive; I'll post when I install it.

The switches available on Ebay, too.

So where do you go next when the switch tests good, bulbs are good, but still no reverse lights?

Right front turnsignal is starting to act up in the same way.....

You start tracing the wiring harness.

It was the switch. The lights work perfectly now.

It was hard to get down to the switch to tighten it though -- it's in a tighter spot than at first appears -- thoughts?

this post is over 2 years old.

isn't this the reverse light switch? on the front of the transmission between the blue clutch cable mount on the left and the black coolant pipe on the right.
