Hi there guys and girls!

I thought I had better have somewhere to put my progress on my current Swift-related project, so here goes :)

It started here really: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=35565

Various things initially looked at when car was home:

Telltale #1 : Green drip of antifreeze below the crank pully. Bye bye water pump!

Telltale #2: Rusty portions in that peculiar little section in front of the front wheels (you know, near the towing points?). Mr Gas Welder will be visiting, as will Mr AEG and Mr File. Mr Bronze will also be doing a cameo appearance.

Spark plug check: tan brown on all tips so car was running reasonably well prior to belt snappage.

Various dints and blemishes on the body, but no real huge rust threats overall. Nothing Mr AEG can't handle anyway :P

Some of the frontage looks like it could do with some loving attention from heat and hammer alike (Dad knows how to make things shrink back into line).

In any case, thus far have stripped the engine of its air filter, both manifolds, water pump, antifreeze, oil filter, and cylinder head!

Found during disassembly:

Thermostat: very new looking, very shiny so has been replaced recently

On the underneath of the cylinder head: Noticed some valve edges were, er, "cleaner" than others. Piston must've made contact...

Cylinder head currently is having a bath at the local Cylinder Head Clinic in their cold tank. These guys cleaned up my last cylinder head to perfection after a previous local machine shop screwed things up royally last time. So I trust them with my new baby :P (plus I will be able to get some discount from them by making them a website and getting their flowbench software running ;) ) The PC work I did for them last time is still going perfectly fine from what I was being told so I think I am liked enough there!

On a fun note: While dropping the cylinder head off, some other people were there stripping a V8 block down on a trailer. One of the two younger people, stopped what he was doing to stare at me carrying this baby twin cam into the workshop.

He later came in asking me what it was off (as I was stripping the cams and lifters off the head) and I told him "Out of another one of those cars like the one sitting outside! Not the sort of thing you'd expect in a Barina, is it?" =) And then gave a short blurb about the engine in general (without giving anything away too much, after all: I like the "sleeper" aspect of these cars to be kept somewhat intact ;) ).

Seems like the parts of these cars even get attention

And for those of you who are going to INEVITABLY post a "This thread is meaningless without PICS!": I *will* be posting pictures as soon as I am able ;)

Here are my two standing side-by-side, the new one on the left image_id: 13281

Removed starter motor and various bolts in preparation for removing the cylinder block as the pistons are definitely in need of new rings at the very least.

Also removed the radiator and got the frontage loose and ready to be moved aside/out of the way so we have a bit more access to the block.

Bores do not look to be in bad shape, so they may get a light rough-up.

Drained the oil out, rather black looking so was overdue anyway ;)

All going well, next weekend should see the block out of the hole and into the workshop!

Well, we got the block out in quite short order!

So the front of the car has sprung up quite a lot due to the removed weight ;)

Things to do:

Post Photos
Panel work to areas in front of the windscreen (rather dinted)
Remove Transmission (makes it easier to line up clutch etc)
Perform other body fixups as needed (a few cosmetic patches and two common rust repair areas needing attention)

All going pretty smoothly thus far :)

Cylinder block was the next victim today, having everything movable and removable removed so that it is all good for cleaning in a cold tank + wash kind of arrangement.

So next up for removal: the transmission! Not that I think I need to do work to it at this point, but it will make it easier to get the clutch lined up etc when it comes back from being washed :)

Next up will be getting the crank checked and machined if necessary, get new rings, bearings, seals, gaskets, and anything else that springs to mind when reconditioning a motor :)

Well this weekend's stint was largely a cleaning one! scrubbing my 10L bucketful of bottom-end parts (those that needed it anyway ;) )

Also managed to remove the transmission, so now the car looks all jacked up at the front of it

Next weekend should see some crank checking and other such stuff

As you can see, things are well underway. Will have to get in touch with the head cylinder clinic to see how things are progressing there

Did some more work this weekend on the car, the front bumper and both front fenders removed in order to do some panel beating and tackle some rusty bits. Hopefully should tackle those next weekend :)

Cylinder block has been cleaned and is ready to go!

Cylinder head is still being worked on, but oh well. Good things take time :)

Removed the lower engine mount at the front of the car, as during engine removal one of the bolts on the mount refused to budge. Cut the head of the bolt off, drilled out the remainder of the bolt.

The only bolt I've had to do that to so far! :)

New parts (piston rings, mains, big ends, seals, valve regrind set, water pump, timing belt) will be getting ordered in the very near future :)

New parts have arrived!

Received:

1 full gasket set (includes tube o' gasket for sump, exhaust gasket, intake gasket, bunches of seals etc for $211NZ), piston rings, mains bearings, big end bearings, crankshaft thrust bearings. This lot came to $450 once freight and sales tax was factored in.

Not too shabby!

Will begin reassembling the bottom end next weekend (and will take photos of the nice shiny pistons and such, for your viewing pleasure :) )

A lot of jealousy here from Southern California!
Very nice....
Take a lot of pictures.
There's a lot of oil in the bell housing.
Is that from the rear main or from the input shaft seal?
You might want to hit up Dattman while you've got it apart....

good point!

I'll have to check that, but I suspect the goodness knows how old crank seal myself.

I'll be able to double check that later. At the moment I'm holed up in bed with the recent flu running around

Right, managed to get over the bug enough to tackle some more car work.

Unfortunately, the block work will have to wait until next weekend due to the fella who has the workshop where my cylinder head and block are currently living being away.

But I did manage to tackle some of the bodywork instead, getting at the rusty bits just above the front towing points at the front of the car with an angle grinder, chisel (due to the tight amount of area, can't entirely cut the rusty bit out with the grinder itself). Once the top rusty layer was removed, it was treated with some Tergo Black Guard rust converter to help reverse and prevent future rusting (hopefully anyway ;) ).

Also got the rest of the remaining front engine mount bolt drilled out. Rethreaded the nut, tested with another mount bolt of the same thread/size/etc. Bolt threaded smoothly in and out, so that shouldn't pose a problem in future! :D

New segments will be welded in next weekend all going to plan :)

So next weekend I'll get busy with tools and a camera! :D

Oh yes, partswise, this is what has been spent so far:

Standard Ring Set : NZD$62.33

Standard Mains Bearing Set : NZD$63.56

Standard Rod Bearing Set : NZD$49.05

Thrust Washer Set : NZD$18.23

Full Gasket Set : NZD$237.38

Freight : NZD$19.46

TOTAL : NZD$450.00

(All prices including G.S.T )

Well, I got to putting the crankshaft back into the block, didn't quite remember the camera however

Sorta ran outta time with one thing and another, so the pistons are awaiting to be put into their respective cylinders. All the pistons have their sparkly new rings on them :)

Now if only I could get more free time to do things

Well...I was putting pistons back into the block...until when I was putting in piston #3 (even though I was being as gentle as possible) I somehow managed to put a little nick into the journal on the crankshaft! :thwack:

So I'll have to see what the recommended course of action is :( kinda put a spanner in the works dammit all!

Those are really good prices - are they imported or sourced in NZ?

Those are nationally sourced parts as far as I am aware nzswift!

The Cylinder Head Clinic down here is run by a Paul McLean (sp? as I know there are several spellings of McLean/MacLean/etc) who is part of the group down here seeing to it that we get a dedicated drag strip down here as well as having Teretonga :D

He's a good fella, certainly looks after me! :)

Did you buy the rings, bearings, gasket set, etcc off him or do you know the national retailer he dealt with?

Nah, I just bought it through him.

I dunno who he dealt with to get them I'm sorry to say! :(

But still, if the prices are good then I'm happy! :D

UPDATE FROM THE GRAVE!

...well not quite :P

After some interesting events I finally got back to rebuilding - and so far I've only got the timing belt and the miscellaneous bits and pieces around the car left to do.

One of the major things will be a rear window for the hatch - the local windscreen outfit can deal with that however :)

Other things will be replacing seat belts and some other odds and ends.

So yes - still around but things have been keeping me busy
