Post subject:  Upgrade from V-belt to MKII Ribbed Belt - any issues?

Can I simply swap alternator and water pump and crank pulleys? or maybe the alternator bracket needs to be changed too?

Although mine is a Turbo and it is nice to keep things OE, I think this would be a welcome upgrade? Criticism is welcome on this point!

i tried this once, to convert a mk1 to a mk2 ac system. the problem was the pulley on the water pump. other than that, it looks like it might work. alt seemed to mount fine. tho keep in mind, i never installed it in the engine bay. might be a problem with the pulley clearance. measure the stock v belt crank pulley and the new ribbed and see if the match up.

What was the water pump pulley issue? Was the hub on the pump different?

I have mounted the alternator on the engine for a mockup and it clears everything just fine. It is typically the Mitsubishi alternator which is about 1" larger diameter, but the lugs are the same.

The later ribbed belt gave more problems than the vbelt in my experience. More squealing if not super tight, and generally less life from the belt. Why are you wanting to switch?

Interesting about the flat belt squealing - because my oil burning MKII does that. It's caused by oil getting on the belt. I've cured that one by slopping it down with Ultra Clean degreaser.

My MKI needs an alternator and I have a MKII complete on my engine stand with everything I need. (Looks like with a $2 pulley from the local alternator shop wizards (Murray Electric in Delmont PA - they're great and I plug them) sold me 2 spacers and a pulley that should work for $1.71 - but that was with garage discount - still, pretty cheap any way you look at it.

Another guy on a forum had a MKII AC set up he wanted to install on a MKI.


Winter cold is one of the factors because the MKI must be worked on in my carport!
