Hi All, I borrowed my Sprint Turbo with rebuilt engine and trans to a friend of mine who did not realize the car had a 5th gear (doh!) Drove it about 120 miles in 4th gear, about 4500RPMs. Car had synthetic in it. Understand the car has 4th and 5th gear overdrive. Does that make the mistake better or worse?

Going to change the oil this week.

How much potential damage did he do?

Thanks

Considering redline is 6500, sounds like you're worried over nothing.

I cruise in 5th around 4000 rpm with undersized tires.

Are you sure about that? I have 5 and a half 1987 and 1988 Mk1 turbo Sprints, Forsas and Fireflies and my understanding is that they all have a 1:1 drive ratio in 5th. Did someone change the gears inside the transmission or differential?

On Topic: if the car still runs I think its Ok, I think they redline at 6000 or 6500 RPM. You've probably just put an infinitesimally tiny, probably unmeasurable, bit of extra wear on the engine which probably cannot be detected by the unaided human senses.

I run 4500 RPM @ 85 MPH
This is how I normally drive. I have had slightly undersize tires on it
for at least the last 20 years.

The last motor I had in it lasted over 300,000 miles.
I'd still be driving it if the valve stem hadn't broken and
took out the piston. I don't even pay attention anymore,
but on the drive in today, I confirmed my RPM's.

You're worried over nothing.
