 Post subject: no 1st gear!

Finally gave out after 170K miles. Would get it if I jammed the stick into 1st on occasion.
Had a used one sitting around, had it sealed, installed a new clutch kit and replaced the old one.
SAME PROBLEM, no 1st gear. Is this a weak point with these cars?
Are there tranny parts available for these cars? If not what would be the next choice?
MK1 non turbo tranny? Direct fit?
I have a third tranny, but I am afraid to slap it in for fear of the same problem.

Any advice/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Very common issue. Non turbo trans will bolt in, just may not have the stronger differential in it. Due to how hard it may be to find another trans, I think you'd be best off to toss your last one in and hope for the best!

i have the same problem right now. but with 1st and 2ed. cant down shift into either and even when stopped 1st is hard to get into. i swapped with a known good main shaft and same problem. i think its in the shift rods. so i am swapping them right now. on the bench it seams to shift better then it did before.but well its out i am also changing the syncros. so it will be hard to say if its a syncro problem or shift shaft problem. as long as its fixed in the end i don't care. right now i have a stock non turbo trans in. its running really good.

Redneck has a problem with elongated slots on the synchro rings I bet. Very common issue. There are 3 or 4 slots on each ring and once they get a bit of wear on them they refuse to allow the trans to downshift properly but will shift up through the gears no problem. Fortunately synchros we easy to get, so it's not as big of a deal as jumping out of gear which requires replacing the gear itself and sliding outer ring(can't remember the specific term for the slider).
You will be able to clearly see wear on the synchros, once they are in your hand the problem becomes clear.

Does anyone here rebuild mk1 trans. If we could find a master craftsman among us to do the job, such as Fainya, Hint! Hint! Hint! :D :D :D I would be one of the many on the list to have the job done. (My 87 turbo is just beginning to jump out of 1st gear, which is the reason I don't drive it much) so is anyone out there doing this,??? Jonathan

there is really poor availability for the hard parts - gears and shafts.

it's hard to rebuild these because of the lack of bits.
