WTF? Total Mystery.
Factory serviced '87 MK1 T3, 120k miles, runs smooth.
One day, BAM! Dies on the run.
Check everything, recheck...check again.

Due to busy schedule, send to buddy to check as I've had it with this POS! HA! just kidding.
So turns out rotor position is 180° off.
Did not check rotor position at #1 TDC, why? no reason to suspect.
(really, should have gone further but missed it, the impossible becomes reality)
Car was running perfect, dies on the run, then distributor off 180.

Long story short, buddy reclocks distributor by removing advance plate
and reclocking rotor position 180. Car fires up, runs, passes emisssions.

How? Why? Difficult to comprehend.

So, what happened?

Yes, I checked all that before I sent the car down.

Then it was checked again at the shop.
Only person I would ever even think about letting them
touch my stuff. So he started diagnosing from scratch, and we discussed
all the common sprint problems.

I'm glad it's fixed, but can't sleep at night because still don't
know what happened or why.
