here's a little background which may help in figuring out my prob...
i have an' 88 turbo firefly with 260k km on it.. been in storage for almost 8 months in my garage.. brought it out and dusted it off.. so that i could use it as a commuter from my home in chilliwack to my job in vancouver..
car ran pretty well though sometimes if i let the gas get below a half it would stutter and jump around on acceleration.
so i sent it into the shop jsut a week ago for a bit of maintenace and to get the brakes checked.. they get back to me and tell me my turbo is going to fall apart.. ie:there's bolts missing all over my engine compartment ...great.. (note: never let a highschool mechanics class work on your car) so they charge me 400 smackers and put my turbo back together and do a couple other things like tighten up my shift linkage and flush my coolant and fluids for tranny, engine, and whatever. in the process they replace my thermostat cause it's stuck open..

ever since i got these guys to work on my car the stuttering problem has gotten worse.. it happens in every gear.. and whenever i push the gas pedal down enough to make my boost guage read 5 pounds or more...

talked to the shop today and i don't think he has anyidea what the prob is..
so they checked my fuel system.. i don't know what they did or what they checked but they said they changed my fuel filter and said it was clogged to hell.. so i hop in my car thinking this is the end of my problems.. but as soon as i hit the gas leaving their parking lot the prob happens again...

i don't know tons about cars but i get the feeling that it's either in the fuel system (ie: fuel pump not supplying enough) or something to do with a vaccum hose or an over pressure happening...

in reading these forums i can't find anything similar to what's happening with mine.. please if anyone can help .. or if anyone knows a shop that knows what the hell their doing with turbo fly's in the lower mainland please let me know..

You should check and make sure that your wastegate isnt seized shut. if the car has been sitting for an extended period of time then itsvery likely this could be the problem.

thanks for the quick response FiveZigen..
i read your post and felt a little more hope for my 'fly
so i hopped in it and jumped and sputtered my way down to my local greasemonkey...
i explain that my car is still messed and that someone said it could be the wastegate..
their response "well it appears to be in working order, all the hoses were reconnected and some that weren't connected were put back on.."

grrreat...
so i mention the tps and maybe it has something to do with that...
he says he'll check out my tps for free today and see if it's that..
i'll post when i have his answer...

so i'm back from the shop...
my tps is good..
he checked all my hoses inside and out and couldn't find anything...
he checked my MAF and it looks alright..
he's stumped and thinks the next step would be the ecu..
but suggested i take it to the local GMC dealer and have them look at it..
so i wandered over to Mertin GM and booked myself another appointment for tmrw at 10:30...

so if things look bad after tmrw ... is anyone looking for an 88 turbo firefly that's had tons of work done on it and it runs perfect except for this problem that noone understands...?
i'd sell it for $1200 (that's how much work has been put into it lately)(i have reciepts)

i'm getting to the point where if it isn't at least figured out by tmrw i'm going to toss the car and try to buy something newer.. (unfortunately nothing out there is as fun to drive as a turbo fly)

please anyone who can help let me know...

so i'm back with word from mertin GM today...
and they say my distributor is defunked.. and that's all they could find wrong... evidently the distributor is grounding out on itself at higher rpm's

which is gonna cost me almost 400 bucks for the distributor plus labor...
so yeah if anyone can let me know how hard it is to do the install.. and the timing and what-so-much...
mechanically i'm middle of the road... like if it requires tools more complex than a hammer and a wrench or socket set then i'll look, I'm retarded be lost...

hey mustard you did an engine swap in your car right? since i've been dealing with my igniton i've gotten it into my head to upgrade my ignition.. i was wondering if you had any performance parts lying around from your 3 cyl turbo or if you knew what stuff i'd need to find...

OMG they're gonna charge you $400 to change your distributor!?!? The most complex tools you need to change a distributor are your two hands. It just unclips from the side of the cylinder head, it takes all of 5 seconds, add another 10 seconds for the ignition wires.
I'll do it for $200

have u looked on turbo3haven about your problem from what I have read there the mkI distributor has springs inside that go to the flyweights and commonly the springs break  u could take the distributor apart or at least look inside at the bottom see if there is shrapnel in there to verify your problem  . also just wonderg if anybody told u to tighten your hose clamps from the mav to the throttle body if they are loose and leak it confuses the computer

the distributor itself is gonna be 400 bucks no matter what parts store i went to..
and it's only gonn be a hundred bucks for them to install it and redo the timing and etc.. plus the work will be guaranteed so i can blame and screw ups on them.. so i don't care... but they just got the right distributor shipped in sat around mid day, so my car won't be rolling till monday...

i'll be happy when everything is back together and my car works again..
it'll be sweet though cause i'll never have driven it when it's worked this good..
it even managed to get a 17 sec quarter at mission with my bro driving..
which a difficult feat considering my bro weighed 220 at the time...

but yeah when's the next cruise coming up? my bro jsut got back from doing a cruise with his buddies from vwdov.ca

here's the link for their cruise.. my bro's car is the mk2 red gti..

you know what's great?
not having a car
i've been sitting around the house doing nothing lately
jsut because mertin can't seem to find my part
i managed to find a remanufactured one through lordco but they'd have to order it from a company called cardone (i think), and cardone is in missaugua ont. BUT the part isn't in missaugua. it's in philladelphia..
ok so whatever it'd take two weeks to get here so i vetoed that plan..
going for a used one..
found one at Super L'Auto (good wrecking yard for swift/fly/geo/etc.. parts in abby)
so they ship one out.. SUPPOSED to arrive yesterday.. nope..
Mertin tells me today that they think Super was giving them a line when Super said it was being shipped by W7 yesterday... which i tend to believe conisdering it's being shipped by bus today...
soo
maybe i'll get my car today
and maybe it'll work
and MAYBE i'll be able to work tomorrow

man i woulda just gone and picked it up from abbotsford if i'd known in the first place.. this is stupid.. goddamm you god of auto parts.. why do you curse me so...

problem is the distributor for a turbo is different than a distributor for a non-turbo.. (at least that's what i've been told)

talking to mertin right now
no distributor

thanks to nitro for the referrals

if they can't find another one local then they're gonna call those guys

PS: 400 was for a new distributor (which they can't find)

it'll be cheeper for a used one, i know..

it won't be cheaper if you have to get it from Super Ripoff in abbotsford ..
all those ones i gave you are for the turbo .. & most of them are 800#'s .. but they're all at least a time zone ahead ..
oh & only the turbos were fuel injected, so don't be put off by the lack of description, car-part.com does a really great job of cross referencing parts ...

It's not, They're all alike. You should go to your local junkyard and buy one for cheap. I think it's a bit too late now, Iwould have had some test for you to do in order to make sure the problem is not the dizzy. I don't think it's the dizzy btw.

Sorry to answer this late, I must have missed that post. Keep us updated on how things goes.

thanks guys for keeping an eye on my updates
hope i'm entertaining a few with my battles with mertin
the biggest problem is i'm not getting much info from them throughout this whole thing
like i always have to call them to find out what's happening and if they guy in charge of my car isn't there they say they'll call back and they don't

evidently this super l'auto place has been jerking them around..
i don't know if mertin's feeding me a line or not but whatever
they say the part will be there tmrw morning at 10:30 latest
so that means i'll have my car by noon

and as to the subject if it's not the distributor.. well.. then i'm gonna snap
because i have nothing against getting rid of the car.. but.. the car is a great car.. it's super cheap to insure.. super cheap on gas.. and it's tons of fun to drive..

oh well i'll deal with that if it has to happen..

anyways.. until noon tmrw

this is the stupidest thign i've ever seen

I had a similer problem and it was the seal on my oil cap was rotted, and for some reason it was getting to much air.AND ALSO LOOK for a cracked hose from the MAF to the turbo this will cause the problem also

jardamuth,

thanks for the response to turbofly88 on the turbo distributor being the same as a N/A distributor. i had been planning on using my N/A unit on the multiport head i got from you and then i got wondering about the advance curve.

the ones i've been cleaning up have 2 vacuum cans plus the mechanical advance.
