I've been commuting in a 98 Metro for a couple of months, 40 miles round trip.

I've been averaging over 45 on most fillups and pulled a 50.55 on the last tank.

Thanks to this web site, i've learned a few tricks to increase the mileage... hopefully, I'll be able to keep it at or over 50 mpg now.

with dual turbonetics T-76 turbos i get probably as good of gas mileage as a stock 70-80s v8 7-10mpg

For those experienced in pulse and glide: I seem to recall someone saying during the pulse to accelerate with 50 - 75% throttle. That seems a bit aggressive to me. Roughly how long does it take you to accelerate, say, from 45mph up to 60 on level terrain? I'm trying to beat my current 35 city/42 highway performance.

Just calculated my last tank, drove 1 liter:19 kilometers, without trying to save any gas (the boss pays :D) just floor it at the traffic lights and full speed (well 150 km/h isnt that fast, but for a 1.0 it is) on the highway, pull the gears until the end etc.

'91 'vert 1L 5sp, untouched, with top down 49 MPG imperial @110 Km/h.
'96 1.3L 8V 5sp untouched, with stereo cranked 48MPG @ 120Km/h.
"EDIT-UPDATE"
'88 1L 5sp, 250,000km, 54 cruising mainly country roads averaging 70kmh-45mph
'95 1.3 auto untouched, 42 Hwy, 35 city
'90 'vert 1L 5sp, fresh refurb (lapped valves, new rings), with top down 51 MPG imperial @110 Km/h.

Those are average highway speeds. Sometimes a little slower sometimes a little faster.
Around town I average about 44 MPG in the 5 speeds. I never "rat bag" it off the line, it's just not worth it with a stock engine. Shift at around 4000.

A question:

I have a stock 94 gt. I am considering swapping out the final drive for a 4.4.

Does anybody out there have a guess or some experience with how much my gas mileage is likely to drop?

Drove my new to me stock 1.0L 93 vert approx 6400 km this past summer commuting 215km/day @ 65mph. Average for the total corrected for my 6% error for tire size was 4.68L/100km, 60.35mpg (imp), 50.26mpg (U.S.).

My even newer to me 94 3/5 hatch winterbeater is averaging 5.2L/100, 54.32mpg (imp), 45.23mpg (U.S.) on winter gas. I know there is more available there when I get my fuel system glitches worked out. My tailpipe is very carboned up and looks like it is running pig rich.

A big saving over my 3.0L Ford Taurus which averaged 8.1L/100km summer, 9.2L/100km winter doing the same commute. :D

I could get almost 50mpg in my 1.6 16v 4wd sedan. If I tried hard enough, I would get 42-49mpg highway and if I stayed behind a minivan or something substantially bigger than a swift, I could get close to 60mpg. City was usually around 34-37mpg. Once I caught a Chrysler Voyager doing 90mph, stayed behind him for 60 miles and got 61mpg  On another note, I also own a 97 Voyager 3.3 and it only does 24mpg if I try really hard :-P In the city it can come down to 12, especially if I don't wait for the engine to get warm.
