My 97 LSi 1.3 has power steering. This car is not that heavy, though I expect that without PS, plenty of steering effort will be required at parking speed. Won't bother me, so next week I will see if I can remove the drive belt and install a shorter one to bypass the PS pump. Looking to gain 1 or 2 mpg.

Is this a common mod? Anybody else running their car like this?

my brother in law and i tried this once on his old integra. it was way harder to steer with the p.steering belt off. harder than it should have been.

then i remembered hearing click and clack the tappet brothers talking about this subject.

their advice is not so supportive of the idea ... "Driving a car with a broken power-steering system is harder than driving a car that never had power steering in the first place. That's because the two systems use very different steering racks."

and then ... "The second potential dire consequence is that the power-steering fluid that WAS running through his steering rack -- until it got disconnected -- is what lubricates the steering components. So right now, they're not getting any lubrication."

but then, i always find their advice to be a little extra cautious. hard to know what to do.

The best way to disable power steering is to grab a manual steering rack from a MK2/MK3. I don't know for certain if they fit, but it's already established that the suspension and other parts are interchangable with older models, so there's a good chance you can.
