Here are the gear ratios for all international model Swifts including 1.0L, 1.3L, 1.6L, SOHC / FWD / DOHC /MT / AT:
We know fuel economy is very much affected by gear ratios and in particular the resulting RPM's. In other words, if your engine revs higher than it must at any given time, you are wasting gas!

Notes: The ratios were taken from an official Suzuki/Germany publication of 1994. Data applies to international (European/German) models!
All of the following were sold as "Swift", none were sold as Firefly or Metro in Europe.
Regional or local market models, such as USA models, models for complying with unusual emission / lighting / road or safety regulations might be different. I will never find out unless somebody says so.

The tyres of these cars were as follows:
All had 155/70R 13 except
1.3L SOHC convertible: 165/65R 13
1.3 FWD: 165/70R 13
1.3 DOHC (GTI): 175/60 14
1.6, all: 165/65R 14


Manual transmission all except1.3 DOHC except all FWD, except all 1.6L:
1st gear: 3.416 (revised to 3.58:1 on US 1.3L 1995+ only ?)
2nd. gear 1.894
3rd gear: 1.280
4th gear: 0.914
5th gear: 0.757
Reverse: 3.272

Manual transmission, only 1.3 DOHC:
1st: 3.416
2nd: 1.894
3rd: 1.375
4th: 1.030
5th: 0.870
R: 3.272

Manual transmission only 1.3L FWD:
1st: 3.545
2nd: 1.904
3rd: 1.310
4th: 0.969
5th: 0.815
R: 3.250

Manual transmission, all 1.6L:
1st: 3.250
2nd: 1.772
3rd: 1.233
4th: 0.911
5th: 0.769
R: 3.250

Automatic:
1st gear: 2.810
2nd gear: 1.549
3rd gear: 1.0

Differential, MT:
1.0L SOHC: 4.105
1.3L SOHC: 3.523
1.3L SOHC/FWD: 3.944
1.3L DOHC: 4.105
1.6L SOHC: 3.722
1.6L SOHC/FWD: 3.944

Differential, automatic:
1.0L: 3.950
1.3L: 3.684
1.6L: 3.450

If you want to know how often the engine has to turn in a certain gear to make the tires turn once, here's how:
Take the gear ratio times the differential ratio. For example, a 1.0L/MT in fifth gear (0.757) times the differential ratio (4.105) = 3.107 That means 3.107 turns of the engine for one turn of the tyres.
The 1.3L SOHC MT in fifth gear would be 0.757 x 3.523 = 2.66
The 1.0L SOHC AT in top (3rd) gear would be: 1.0 x 3.950 = 3.950

i thought i had read somewhere that the 1.0 manual transmission's ratios or final drive was different (taller) for cars with 12 inch wheels compared to 13 inch wheels. the U.S. XFI model was different as well from the regular 1.0 MT cars.

i'm hoping so, because i've got an extra transmission from a '92 (1.0, 12 in wheels) that i was thinking of trying in my '98 (1.0, 13 in. wheels).

i also have one from a 1.3 sohc. that one would probably be best.

Unless I'm mistaken there are different ratios in the five speed manual transmissions - 3rd, 4th & 5th are different on the GT/GTi models -

there are apparently differences for the 1.0 cars between the pre- and post- '95 versions, the XFi, and the convertibles.

unfortunately, it's hard to figure out what's correct.

I've seen both from official-looking sources. :?

This comes from GM and applies to the US cars (and maybe others?). I don't know the exact year the change took place, but I'm pretty sure it was during the MK4 (1995+) era.

Thanks for the input! Sorry I didn't mention all models.
The original post has now been edited and all information i ever collected is included, even tyre size.

If you think I missed something or made a mistake, let me know so the original posting can be corrected again.
Maybe it can be made a sticky part of the FAQ section once nobody wants it changed...

not yet mentioned is the 4.39 final drive in the 1.0L cars with 13 inch tires.

Any of the non-turbo cars with 13" wheels had the 4.39. It makes the final drive the same as 4.11 with 12's.

geometro, I have no info whatsoever about 4:39 or any models to do with it, and also nothing about 12 inch wheels at all.
Nothing I ever saw made it to this part of the world, and perhaps not even to the international market. We saw only 13 inch wheels except a very few 1.6Lwith 14 inch. (We drive way too fast on the Autobahns for that sort of final ratio, especially with smaller 12' wheels.) I will gladly edit the original post, but need more details than that. Maybe send me a private message.

Perhaps someone would like to setup a ratio table for USA models?

unfortunately, i don't know anything more about it than what i read in those two threads that i linked above.

if i'm not mistaken, the majority of the mk3 1989-1994 1.0L north american cars came with 12 inch wheels. but i'm saying that based on my memory/observations.

i looked in my 1998 factory service manual and my owner's manual for gear ratios/final drive numbers, but couldn't find any figures. where did you find the information you posted?

I pulled the following info from various US brochure scans:

1989-1994 Swift 1.3L 5-speed:
1st = 3.416
2nd = 1.894
3rd = 1.280
4th = 0.914
5th = 0.757

GA/GS final = 3.523
GT final = 4.105

3-speed auto:
1st = 2.810
2nd = 1.549
3rd = 1.000

Final = 3.506 (1994)
3.684 (1989-1993)

1998 Metro:
1st = 3.42 (3.58 with 1.3L)
2nd = 1.89
3rd = 1.28
4th = 0.91
5th = 0.76
Final = 4.39 (3.79 Sedan)

Automatic '98 Metro same as older Swift ratios posted above except with a 3.61 final drive. Auto was not available on 1.0L '98 Metros.

for the first one, the swift 5-speed, i assume that's with the 1.3? in the cdn market at least, there was also a swift 1.0 available in that generation.

it's funny that info would be in the brochures, but not in: my owner's manual; chilton repair guide; factory service manual (unless i just missed it - the FSM is huge).

Correct, that's for the 1.3L. I don't think there was ever a 1.0L Swift in the US.

So my wifes 99 Metro Auto has a final of 3.61?
How about my 89 GTI Auto?
Or my 92 1.0 Auto?

I was hopeing to get better milage with the GTI trans in the 99 Metro and the same for the 92 Geo Metro with the 99 into it?

Some good info here. Nobody wants to waste gas, especially nowadays. You can check with your local mechanics to make sure you're getting good enough MPG as well.

I build transmissions.
My results are as follows
All with 13" wheels 155/80-13 tires
97 1.3L auto with 4.10 ring and pinion.
highway 40 mpg 70 mph
92 1.0L vert auto 4.39
highway 36 mpg 65 mph
97 1.3L 5 speed 3.79
highway 40 mpg 70 mph 45 mpg 65 mph
92 1.0L vert auto 4.10
highway 41 mpg 65 mph
97 1.3L 5 speed 3.52
highway 35 mpg 70 mph
92 1.3L 16 valve DOHC 5 speed
highway 40 mpg 70 mph

As for the transmissions having different gear sets, of the 20 transmissions I have built, they all have the same teeth count
on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and reverse gear.
The only thing I see different is the ring and pinion teeth count.
Width of ring and pinions... Thicker gears on 1.3L sohc and 1.3L dohc.

Not quite sure why you are dragging up old posts, but I'll clarify this once again... all North American 1.0/1.3 rod change gearboxes have the same 1-5 ratio's, gti's sold in the rest of the world got a lower 3rd(1.373), 4th(1.03) and 5th(0.871) gear, the exception to this is the very late 90's when they used a lower 1st and rev gear.

As a rule the 3cyl versions have narrow crownwheels and 4cyl's have 1' wide crownwheels.
