ok I bought a 91 metro conv. with 97k on the clock. just
as a precaution I had the local Chevy dealer install a new
timing belt since the previous owner said it had never been
done. got the car back and now it idles maybe 200-300 rpm
faster than before. can this be modified through adjusting the distributor? How much will this affect my MPG? Was at 40 in town. Still working on the next tankful will check MPG at next
fill up.
One more ?.Whats with some gas stations adding ethenol?
Is it suppose to be better? More fuel efficient?
Thanks for your help.

First off you can adjust the engine idle speed by hand 2 ways: 1) Use a flat blade screw driver and turn the idle adjustment screw clockwise till the idle lowers or 2) loosen the throttle cable to factory spec play (3-5 mm i think). These are all located on the throttle i think.

Ethanol is added to gas because it acts as a natural anti-freeze, increases octane and lowers emissions.

correct me if im wrong guys

im not a fan of ethanol because of what ive read on ze internetz about carbon deposits and what not, but who knows if its all a scam. Even if it was the gas companies wouldnt tell you shit. It does increase octane though, but remember octane doesnt equal power, its knock prevention, the higher the octane the more timing/boost the engine can take without knocking. I just found out we do have a few pumps in town that pump 94 with ethanol at a mohawk station, same price as 91, but a longer drive to get there. Im only going to use 94 from now on in the sprint.

If you can get high octane with no ethanol, do it, its the better fuel. correct ME if im wrong. some have 5/10% blends. But shell being "top-tier" fuel now, their premium contains no ethanol, but the lower octane does...

the idle screw was set at factory and capped. hasnt been adjusted since. the idle seems erratic to me. at first start it may be 1200 rpm then may drop to 900 rpm or it may jump to 1500. eventually after some running and maybe a start or two later it drops to about 900. im dissappointed now. car only got 36 mpg on last tank. was at 40. now rpm is screwed. and i took it to a chevy garage at that.
please help. i bought the car to get the mpg. this sucks!
