How's it done? It's not something I've ever played with....is it as simple as twisting the dist? How is it measured?

Must have a timing light, pretty cheap investment. Loosen 2 bolts holding the distributor to the head. With the engine running, watch the timing mark on the crank pulley while you slowly twist the distibutor. When you get it where you want it tighten the bolts and recheck the setting in case it has moved.

Depending on the year you also have to jump the timing connector. There should be a pic under the hood of the jumper location.

Which way you twist the disty to advance the timing? Clockwise (looking down at it)?

Advance would be turning the top towards the windshield. Clockwise when looking at it from the driver's side.

It's weird. I've now turned it both ways, and have had similiar results. I just need to get a stupid timing light! Thanks for the info!
