It seems like almost every way to get more power or more economy has been talked about. Balancing the gears the in the manual transmission would seem a way to pick some power, smoother shifts, and some economy from less friction. But how would you balance the gears. Individually or as an assembly ?
To reduce friction something would have to be more wear resistance. We used to have our tooling coated with Titanium Nitrate. The punches and dies would look nice. It looked like gold. There were 2 process. One hot and one cold. the Cold one was cheaper and thiner. You could almost see thru it. It made a big difference on how long something lasted. But it was not cheap.

Can you give me an idea as to the cost for a 1.0? Roughly I mean. So I can mentally add that in to my rebuild and figure the number of hrs I will have to slave for this thing.

Thanks!

Once you get the cars dialed-in (compression, leaks, bearings, alignment, brakes) swap in new rubber and glass, you've got something which should last for years!

Put straight cut dog gears in it. Then you'll be able to get to freeway speeds in under 30 seconds. Seriously if you have that much money to piss away in a geo you might want to consider a different platform then the metro.
