So getting up to 50km i dont care but once in 50 is it wise to stay in 4th gear or go up to 5th im just thinking if might have to work harder to keep it there which would get better mpg?

On level roads try to minimize the rpm -- down to 1700.
to go uphill you may have to shift into 4 or even 3.
coasting downhill in gear with foot off gas is better than neutral.

i have gotten 62 mpg "combined" with a 3 cyl.

My car lives in 5th. I'll lug her down to 30mph before downshifting if possible. i also drive it normal, no hypermiling here last tank was 53-56MPG. I do 65-70 MPH on the freeway and 10 over everywhere else. The mighty 3cyl likes to go LOL!

I also get well over 50 MPG with my 1998 model. Of course the 3Tech economy cam and advanced timing gear really helps.
