Don't know how a technology that Jacobs is just coming out with right now for heavy diesel truck engines only replaced EGR on my 98 Metro. Yes VVT could be used in a configuration that would create an EGR effect, but no one is doing that today because the three way catalyst made EGR obsolete ten years ago.

It seems that you know everything about VVT. I can't fool you.

brass tubes that convey the EGR onto the intake valve are the major restriction.

Those aren't for EGR. :search:

OK, I'll bite. They don't seem to communicate with the PCV port in the intake manifold. I'll confess to being a dumbmass in this regard, and neither Chilton nor the FSM is helpful.

So what are the brass tubes in the intake ports connected to / for?

They lead to a small vacuum port in the throttle body and create some swirl/turbulence in the intake ports. On some engines they might not be connected to anything. When I ported my 8-valve head, I cut them off flush with the port walls, but left them functional. It seemed like a good compromise to me.
