Plugs into your OBD 2 port, or if you are clever enough, you could hard wire it, leaving your port open.

Quoted from Summit Racing,
"Four display modes, two electronic readouts, and one simple connection add up to big savings at the pump! The 2 1/4" AutoMeter Ecometer gathers data from your vehicle's OBD 2 port, calculates instant and average MPG, and helps you stay in that MPG sweet spot."

i happen to have a analog one from EQUIS or EQUUS. (done by the prveious owner of my mk1)
I used it a couple of months. since this week i am not looking at it anymore. just listening to the engine like i used to do (dont look @ revs too)

I also have the voltmeter and temperature of same brand. temp is on the passengerdash. other 2 in the "midsection"

Here is a thread on EM about it. Looks like reviews are mixed.

Too bad those don't fit a lot of cars, but this link shows a nice gauge that fits OBDII cars:

Auto Meter is a Fuel Consumption eco-gauge that helps drivers visually monitor how their driving style impacts their vehicle's fuel consumption. It is with Digital Tachometer with Instantaneous Fuel Economy, Digital Speedometer.
