im running a 3 cyl 993cc swift and looking to get the most mpg for the cheapest buck.

Does having the power steering run off the crank add much stress to the engine and hence use more fuel??

thanks
Steve

not at all. it's very low. when fully loaded takes about 100 extra rpm.

Buy a shorter belt and bypass the PS pump. I did that a few years ago on a 1.3L, it steered fine, didn't hurt anything. Don't know if there was mpg gain.

you'd get a better increase by removing all the powersteering weight and replacing with non-PS equipement. A powersteer rack is different to a non-ps rack in that a non-ps rack is easier to turn then a PS rack with the lines disconnected.

Having used both i suggest keeping the PS

I think you absolutely right, Power steering is used to help the person managing the van by implementing some ability to a part of the engine especially. he steering pump contains many fundamentals that takes about 100 extra rpm.

Power steering is a great source to save gas. Power steering can be a great gas saving, but only if you sustain your steering program effectively. Your power steering system needs that you sustain the proper liquid stages at their the best possible stages at all time.

Now to get someone to translate that into engrish...
