Hi, im looking at buying the econo cam with +10 advance cam sprocket.

At present i get around 55mpg doing on average 55mph at 2500rpm.

Doing the same speed and revs will i see a difference in mpg?

What others will ask is.....what year, what engine, what form of fuel delivery, what transmission, what size tires. All things that can impact the final results

I run a 3tech econo cam in my recently built 86 Sprint 1.0 NA.

I do not run the +10gear as 3tech himself told me that the early NA engines did not need it. I run my timing in the 6-8 range. I have tried taking it as high as 10 but saw no different results in MPG.

The car came with an automatic transmission, and I was told that I would never get much more than about 34-36 mpg. After the build, running 62-65, which in and auto is the 3500rpm range, my setup gets 38-42. When its all highway its 42, when its mixed its 38. This IS with the eco cam. What it would do with a stock came I dont know. My presnt plans for better economy is a 3.52 manual transmission, but I havent had the time to get it installed yet.

If you already get 55mpg, you are in the rare HIGHER than avg range. I would definately document ALL aspects of its running condition prior to changing anything.

I too am attempting to build the max mpg commuter. As I also own an 87 turbo model that gets 54 I know it can be done.

all those other variables are irrelivant, with the same setup, will there be a noticable difference in mpg from stock to eco cam?

if someone who has gone from stock cam to eco cam could give their results that would be great.

mkc1962 a manual box will help loads, i do 50mph at 2500rpm and get 55mpg :) on uk 95ron fuel

I justt got the +10 cam sprocket . but i was told that the cam would not help me that much since most of my driving is done on the hiway and not in town, and i drive 55 in the morning and 60 plus in the afternoon 99 metro 1.0 5 speed. i got 44.1 on my last tank. I will put the cam gear on the next chance i get and new timming belt .

I've had the 3tech cam and a +8 sprocket for 6 years. I saw no change in mpg with either part. Cam timing rarely has a direct effect on mpg but it can allow your engine to run comfortably at a lower rpm which in turn can give an mpg bump and this is what I was going for. I put the sprocket on->no change, cam in->no change, 7.5% taller tires->5% improvement in mpg.

well last week i averaged 62.4mpg :D !! Im well happy with that. Only mods ive done is cold air pipe removed, 70profile tyres on 13" wheels, no spare wheels, smashed out precat.

Am I gonna get even better results with the econo cam and sproket? doesnt sound promising but I would like to hear more reports from people using it

cruizing most of the journey at 55mph no added weight in the car, and perfect weather conditions. I normally average 55mpg doing the same journey, but can soon drop down to the 40's when doing over 60mph or driving on backroads.

Plus 95ron fuel here in UK.

I have a friend getting in the low 60's with his Metro.

That guy that posted is the only time I've ever heard of anyone saying they didn't see a MPG difference with the econo cam.
Have a look on geo metro forum. That's where most of them are.

Just got the xfi cam grind. best mpg pre xfi was 52. yesterday pulled a 56. my average was 45-48. so anything over 50 is good for me. i have to drive like a granny to get over 50. but i think the cam is helping at speeds lower than 45. the mpg really starts to drop over 55mph.

Stevieh6 I suspect that I am the friend that 3Tech is talking about. I installed one of his cams in my 94 3/5 hatch in Oct last year. Since then I have been experimenting, testing, tweaking and repairing wheel bearings etc.
I have finalized my cam timing at + 6 having tried many settings up to and including one full tooth (18 degrees) advanced. I have a 66 mile commute and I drive at 100 km/h, 62mph. 175-70-13 tires not super over pressure. I am running a 4.10 trans but am going to change to a 3.79 as I suspect that the added torque of the econo cam will pull the extra gear.

Ign timing @ 12 degrees now, just shy of detonation.

My last tweak was to replace a bad MAP sensor and since then I have run through 4 tanks of fuel. Each tank has been better than the last and all four tanks have been above 65mpg IMP. The last tank I wanted to see how far the Metro would go on a full tank so I put exactly seven litres of fuel in a can and ran the car completely dry. Here are the results including the seven litres and then filling the tank to overflowing 1 km later at the gas station. My current tank is at about 450 km and I can tell you right now that it is going to hit the 70 mpg barrier barring any strange things.

Distance travelled
1006.8 km
625.63 miles

Fuel Amount
42.000 litres
11.1 US gallons
9.24 Imperial gallons

Fuel Economy
4.17 litres per 100 km
56.38 miles per US gallon
67.72 miles per Imperial gallon

If anyone ever says that the econo cam doesn't save them gas then they don't have a good running car to begin with or are driving with a very heavy boot on the right foot.

If you drive a lot on the highway there are two additions that are gold as far as helping get the best from the econo cam. Aero mods including grill block and airdam and a vacuum gauge. Here is a pic of my airdam worth about 4+ mpg and my vac gauge worth I don't know how much because I am still learning how to use it to best advantage but it is really, really helping. The vac pic was my temporary location. It is now mounted on the dash.
