recently purchased a 89 gti

......runs a little rough at times. at different rpms it feels like a dead cylinder, other rpms it is silky smooth. timing marks line up just fine. under load, definite dead cylinder.
compression test as follows:
cyl #1-185 psi
cyl #2 185 psi
cyl #3 190 psi
cyl #4 185 psi
pretty even across the board, if you ask me. was told when I bought the car that it had a stuck valve.
cam lobes look fine, but I didn't measure them. all the lifters and springs were moving. power at all 4 injectors. fuel pressure ok.
new injectors.
new plugs/cap/rotor/wires/
new dizzy
possible bad cam or one collapsed lifter? this is my second twincam, my first to need repairs. easily hits redline. no engine codes.
any ideas ? if I can find enough lifters from my 1.0 engines, I might change them all......

 that's what the previous owner thought as well, he installed 4 brand new oem injectors, and it still ran the same after having them installed.
tested them each individually with a meter, they all have the same values
back-probed the wire loom, its fine.....

Definatly sounds like a bad injector.

My next guess would be a flakey MAF or a vacuum leak or even a bad spark plug.

Have you checked the ECU for any codes?

A possible tell-tale on the injector is the higher compression on #3--that's the one that went on me and also jacked up the compression in the same way (carbon from leaking fuel?? IDK  ). The inner ones go first.

I know you said you put new ones in, and a bad injector will also usually also be bad at idle, but try throwing a known good one on #3 and see if that fixes you...

This is a tough one, I barely resisted buying that car but I'm done on them as far as buying more. I was really expecting you to find a burned valve by the symptoms and conclusion of "stuck valve" it came to you with.
Can you for sure place which cylinder it is? Sorry to backtrack but I just want to confirm some stuff and see if I can help out. Idle is always smooth, clearly on all cyls? Under acceleration it's very clearly dropping a cylinder? Revs to redline, but feels likes it's on 3 cyls?
If it will drop a cyl while sitting still revving it up you will find it easier. With those compression numbers you can almost certainly rule out a mechanical failure like valves/rings/camshaft etc. I have done a ton of these and never seen a factory lifter mess up, so I'm really hesitant on that.
Can you use a noid light to watch injector pulse on each cylinder as you rev up engine.
A long shot is something keeps plugging one injector, I ran into that once on a gm 6L, it literally had an injector full of sand and dirt at the end of the rail where it all collected! I think t3 said in a past post that the injectors are batch fired, meaning that they don't have separate feeds to ecu, so by virtue of that, wiring and ecu are very unlikely to be found as the problem or they would all be cutting out.

:D ITS ALIVE ! THANKS TO A FELLOW TEAMSWIFTER THAT SOLD ME SOME USED PARTS! 8)
had some time to kill, the boys were out shooting the .22, I had the door of the shop open, was going to work on the wifes truck, but then I saw that lonely gti in the corner, and the box of recently acquired gti parts......so I........
Changed out the four fuel injectors and the fuel rail, all at the same time.............
had a hard time starting it up (I was told these parts were old, possibly dirty)..........
lots of cranking......then it fired
first one cylinder.......
then two......three.....and four......
cracked the throttle a few times.......NO MORE MISS/ DEADSPOT......
TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE.........NO MORE ISSUES!
pulls hard. swapped out plates, will drive it to work to see what other issues it has.
THANKS AGAIN TO A FELLOW TEAMSWIFTER! :D
