I have a 1989 Swift Gti rally car fitted with twin 40 weber carbs using a MK1 distributor.
The car just will not start from cold without being towed down the road.
It starts easily once towed but does take a long while to idle correctly.
The car will then restart with ease but once it cools down it will not start.

Compression is very low across all cylinders at only 60psi but once its running and its warm it feels like it has good power.

Any thoughts ?

what kind of spark plugs do you use?

and 60psi is almost no compression.. did you measure that at cold or hot engine? stock swift have like 200psi.. so 60psi can't make any real power.. but if compression goes up once engine is hot that might be problem..

anyway really high CR engines need colder (higher numbers) spark plugs and those have problems to start cold engine
and i don't know much about carbs but i guess A/F mix is not best to start up cold engine right?

You might be having a similar problem to what I was getting... Except mine was fuel injected.

The injectors leaked, flooding the engine when not running, also causing the cylinder walls to be washed free of oil (low compression)..

Is it possible your carbs are leaking fuel into the intake with the engine off and causing a similar problem?

Do you find it cranks over easily and more quickly when cold? But when it is warm it cranks over a little slower??

Can you smell raw fuel in the intake when it is cold?
